It ends with Jack getting a goose that laid golden eggs. As a marketer who uses a great <a href=\"https:\/\/birdeye.com\/blog\/referral-marketing\/\">referrals program<\/a>, I have one thing to say: Referrals are your golden goose. If you want the golden eggs, you need to be intentional in the development, execution and follow-up of your referral program. Let me talk about how the company I work for, <a href=\"https:\/\/emeraldlawns.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Emerald Lawns<\/a>, got started with a referral program and how you can get started too.\u00a0<gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"399\" height=\"156\" src=\"https:\/\/birdeye.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-21-at-5.31.18-PM.png\" alt=\"guest bio \" class=\"wp-image-29284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/birdeye.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-21-at-5.31.18-PM.png 399w, https:\/\/birdeye.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2020-08-21-at-5.31.18-PM-300x117.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-we-prioritized-referral-marketing\">Why we prioritized referral marketing&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few stats which made us see the importance of referral marketing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/insights\/2013\/under-the-influence-consumer-trust-in-advertising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">4X more likely<\/a> to buy when referred by a friend<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nielsen.com\/insights\/2013\/under-the-influence-consumer-trust-in-advertising\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">92% of consumers<\/a> trust referrals from people they know<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One word-of-mouth referral drives <a href=\"https:\/\/review42.com\/resources\/word-of-mouth-marketing-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">5X more sales<\/a> than one paid online advertisement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-our-referral-story\">Our referral story&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In my first weeks as CMO for Emerald Lawns, I found that only 38% of our sales were generated from customer referrals.\u00a0 For a services operation, I realized we need to be achieving at least 65% of our new business from referrals.\u00a0 Prior to our on-boarding of <a href=\"https:\/\/birdeye.com\/blog\/introducing-birdeye-referrals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Birdeye\u2019s Referral platform<\/a>, we were like the other 77% of mid-size businesses that did not prioritize or initiate an intentional referral marketing program.\u00a0<br><gwmw style=\"display:none;\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to starting with Birdeye Referrals, we did not know who or how many loyal customers were making referrals and to whom.&nbsp; Now that we\u2019ve implemented the Birdeye Referral platform, we have all of the information we need to reward our existing customers and welcome our new ones.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I appreciate the simplicity and integration of Birdeye for one reason.&nbsp; Between <a href=\"https:\/\/birdeye.com\/reviews\/\">Reviews<\/a>, Chatbot, <a href=\"https:\/\/birdeye.com\/blog\/website-chat\/\">Livechat<\/a>, FAQs and <a href=\"https:\/\/birdeye.com\/referrals\/\">Referrals<\/a>, we now have a way to identify and engage with our \u201cbrand ambassadors\u201d aka our happiest customers. Here are 5 lessons that we learned from sending <a href=\"https:\/\/birdeye.com\/blog\/importance-of-referrals-for-your-business-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">customer referrals<\/a>.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-have-a-target-know-what-your-aiming-for\">Have a Target \u2013 Know What Your Aiming For<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You must have a goal to measure your progress. State exactly what you\u2019d like to accomplish with your program \u2013 say, \u201cmotivate 50 current customers to refer friends to purchase thereby, generating 35 new customers over the next 6 weeks\u201d. This way you have a clear picture of what you\u2019re trying to accomplish and can determine if your plan is really achieving the results you\u2019re after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-it-s-all-about-timing\">It\u2019s All About Timing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your ideal \u201cbrand ambassador\u201d is very familiar with your product or service.&nbsp; Review your customer lists and identify those who have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Been loyal for the longest period of time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Generate higher than average revenue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early adopters of any new products or services you offer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Purchase more frequently than average<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Asking for a referral during your first interaction with a customer probably won\u2019t net you the results you\u2019re looking for. Reach out to your customer base at the right time \u2013 when they\u2019ve had a good experience with you or recently made a purchase are good times.&nbsp; The key &#8211; develop a relationship first, and the rest will fall into place.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-in-it-for-them-make-it-worthwhile\">What\u2019s in it for Them \u2013 Make it Worthwhile&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For customers to sing praises about you, make it worth their time. Offer incentives your advocates will enjoy and, more importantly, show them that they are valued. Many customers might be motivated more by altruistic reasons than self-interested ones, so keep that in mind. An incentive can be something as simple as a shout-out on social or a simple \u201cThank you\u201d. The more your customers feel appreciated, the more likely they\u2019ll be to spread the word about your brand to their own networks.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-put-your-program-on-center-stage\">Put Your Program on Center Stage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If happy customers don\u2019t know about your referral program, then how can they take advantage of it?<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too many businesses have referral programs in place, but they\u2019re so hidden on the website that customers don\u2019t know about it. To effectively promote a referral program, strategically place it on your Home page, Contact Us page and if you have an e-commerce site the Checkout page. So, when a customer visits your website, they\u2019ll see the program front and center in all key locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nothing-is-more-powerful-than-thank-you\">Nothing is More Powerful Than \u201cThank You\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, don\u2019t forget to thank your \u201cambassadors\u201d after every successful referral. It could be as simple as an email, or as elaborate as sending a gift \u2013 the key \u2013 don\u2019t cut corners in this step, be deliberate. It must communicate a <strong>genuine<\/strong> message that you appreciate their support and value them. This will, in turn, further nurture those important relationships and encourage future referrals.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-start-now\">Start now<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An intentionally developed referral program makes your business more profitable. Still, it\u2019s only as good as the work you put into it. Start with these 5 simple tips.
