Get directionsWE have taken a close look at the Independent living area of Samarkand and decided to place a deposit for the future. We loved the variety of 2 bedroom units, the beautiful pool area and numerous other amenities. The lunch we had there was absolutely delicious and super fresh and colorful. Starting to clean out our garage now so we will be ready to make the move.
I have lived at the Samarkand for 5 years now. I like what Covenant Living stands for - an Evangelical base. It is very comforting to know that the Chaplains on campus are here for us. They listen to us and help us. The location of my apartment is wonderful! The people here are very friendly. We have a good dining service and the wait staff knows me by name. A lot of activities and education are available too. I live in Independent Living but Skilled Nursing is available. If you don't need to be in Skilled Nursing, but you a... read more
The Samarkand, has peace, beauty, history and security. From staff to residents, it is warm, welcoming, engaging and professional. A nonprofit with continuing care for seniors. The living spaces are lovely and adequate. We don't have to worry about home maintenance, cooking or cleaning. There are amenities galore: music, art and crafts, woodshop and flower arranging. There's Tai Chi, Bocce, and field trips offered regularly to events near and far. There's fine dining and cafe style meals to choose from with many options. ... read more
My 99 year old dad moved into Covenant Living at the Samarkand Independent Living about 20 months ago. He has a spacious one bedroom apartment with a sunny patio area off the living room. He takes advantage of many of the activities offered such as concerts, 3 times a week strength and balance classes, the gym, movie night and the well-stocked library. A few weeks ago, he took the shuttle bus (free of charge) out to Costco to do some shopping. The Oaks dining room has a wonderful salad bar and an elaborate menu that he t... read more

Hi Ruth! Thank you so much for taking the time to share these kind words. We're glad your father has chosen to call our community home!
I went to visit a relative who is a resident at the Samarkand. We took him to an early lunch Sunday at the Mountain View Cafe. The lunch was good but what made it great was the person working behind the counter. I didn't catch her name but she was so kind and helpful to us. She made everything at our table just right! She wouldn't accept my tip from me but she refused with a huge sincere smile on her face! I wish I knew her name so i could send her some flowers! I will go back some day and have lunch there again. If anyone ... read more

I just finished one review, but after reading some older reviews, I'm happy to report that the care is much better than nine years ago. When my dad pushes the call button, someone usually responds in under 5 minutes. They seem to be on top of their game!!

Hi Terri! Thank you for your review. We are happy to hear everyone has been helpful and your family member is taken care of.
My parents were ready to move into a continuous care community about 6 years ago, and I researched all of the options in Santa Barbara. I narrowed it down to three that I thought they would like, with beautiful campuses, vibrant and involved residents, and high-quality care for those who need it. They chose Samarkand, and moved in about 4 years ago (the wait list can be quite long, so sign up early). They made the absolute right decision. When my stepdad's health declined, the staff was so supportive and wonderful to him and... read more

Mona, thank you for your review. We are happy to hear everyone has been helpful and your family members are taken care of.
Buyer beware! The place looks lovely and the independent living apartments and facilities are great. But watch out! The sales person only told us of one type of nonrefundable entrance fee of around $500k. Having researched other facilities we asked about the higher refundable type. It was around $900k, but you get about 90% back if you leave. Luckily my in-laws pushed for that. A few years after moving in, our Mom was hospitalized and had a couple of months of recovery in the Smith Center, which was fine. But when she was re... read more

My husband and I have lived at the Samarkand for 3 years now. To say that we are thrilled is an understatement. We have met so many nice people... Done so many interesting things... Reside in such a lovely unit... Partake of such delicious, well-presented and beautifully served food ... Participate in several vigorous and enjoyable physical exercise classes... Are content in knowing that future unknown medical problems will be addressed... I could go on and on. Our children and grandchildren often express gratitude that we... read more
