My husband and I have lived at the Samarkand for 3 years now. To say that we are thrilled is an understatement. We have met so many nice people... Done so many interesting things... Reside in such a lovely unit... Partake of such delicious, well-presented and beautifully served food ... Participate in several vigorous and enjoyable physical exercise classes... My aunt lived here for years and I know she loved it there. But when she became ill they would not give the family any information about her prognosis despite having signed releases. We spoke to her and felt she was recovering well. Then a friend told us she had passed away the day before. The staff never called the family in to be with her even though they live right in Santa Barbara. They didn't even call to notify next of kin of her passing. My mother is there and we are trying to get her moved. I would never send anyone there ever again. Giving her medications that her own doctor had taken her off of because they cause blood clots, heart attacks and kidney damage. Three times we thought we had this straighten out and 3 days in a row they tried to give it to her. Leaving patients who need to go to the bathroom 2 hours and not answering call button when needing to go to the bathroom (how long would it take if they were having a choking or heart attack problem... read more

Came to visit the bf's grandma at this lovely retirement home. It's incredibly well managed and peaceful and all the old folks living here seem pretty happy. The staff is wonderful and it really feels like they care about their seniors and will do whatever it takes to make sure that they are comfortable and happy. One thing though.. Sanmarkand seems to only have one type of clientele staying here.. WASPs. This may be due to the religious affiliation of this community though.
