I came into Timpsons today to get my shoes "lengthened" as my big toe was rubbing against the hard toe piece of my new shoes. The shoe repairer was so helpful and kind. He said it wouldnt really help to stretch them lengthways as it would stretch them widthways as well and could even pull the leather away from the sole, and he demonstrated what he meant.
