The problem was a chipped filling on the left lower side which allowed food to become trapped and painfully compressed between the adjacent teeth . This caused painful pressure on the gum which was beginning to swell. Having cleared the compacted food, Stephen assessed that a conventional filling would be unlikely to withstand the pressures involved and that the gap between the teeth should be filled to block any further access of food between the teeth and the gum.
