Came in on President's Day a little after 1pm. it was clear the restaurant was staffed for a normal winter Monday and not a holiday, which is fine, but we entered with two parties ahead of us and one behind. After 10 minutes both servers had used the computer system at the host stand to put in orders and run cards but no one even acknowledged the 7 or so people standing in front of them. Went for restaurant week. The service was exceptional and I enjoyed the atmosphere and open kitchen concept. We sampled 7 different dishes and most of them left something to be desired. Their flavors and execution were lacking The food was the worst part of the experience, but their grits were good.
Attended a dinner there tonight that was put together by La Cocina, (https://lacocinasf.org/) out of San Fransisco. The food was great, but more importantly the recipes were part of the mission of what La Cocina represents -- creating oppurtunities for immigrant women and their families. What was shocking and massively disappointing was the fact that what was thought to be a charity event, was in fact the owner taking advantage of peoples' good nature. Dylan, thanks for your feedback, however your are incorrect that we exploited any situation. If you consider the price of the dinner and the fact that multiple courses were served, including four proteins, unlimited alcohol was included, plus the handmade drinks from the book, and a book included, the dinner was a tremendous value, and we priced it so that people could afford to come and La Cocina would get maximum exposure. Have been a customer for a few years now, and have always enjoyed the food, but this afternoon's lunch was not enjoyable. The noise level was very loud, couldn't hear friends across the table and the food was incredibly salty. We've noticed the salt level before, but it seems to increase with each visit. The staff is always excellent, so there were some bright spots.
After years of Big Jones being my favorite brunch spot, I have to say that yesterday put the end to it. The environment was horribly noisy, we didn't get our coffee until we'd been seated for 15 minutes, and two of our meals were cool. The management made it right, but the past few visits have been decreasingly enjoyable, and I just don't think I'll make dining with them a priority again.
Not great, not bad. Brunch for Easter was forgettable. Felt rushed and inconsistent food. Eggs that were suppose to be poached were left a minute or so too long. Made for a dry New Orleans Benedict. Seated with reservations at the smallest,last table in the back of the restaurant. You know like the toilet seats on an airplane? Came during soul food week. While some was good, others were pretty bad. Server tried to warn me about the gumbo--I didn't listen. I guess I have to come back for their regular menu.
