Get directionsBIOS the home health care service that has an office in Prairie Rose brought in a pharmacy yesterday to give flu shots to those who wanted one. Looked like everyone in Prairie Rose got the shot which is good. Don’t need to spread the flu around, seniors have enough problems without the flu. My wife and I went to our family doctor two weeks ago intending to get our flu shot but they were not prepared to start giving the shot. Pharmacy coming to the retirement home is big help and another example of Prairie Rose taking care o... read more
When considering moving into a retirement home, everyone researches major details like the apartment, environment, sanitation, meals and of course staff but what about everyday requirements that make life easier and more enjoyable? At the Prairie Rose things like the apartment, TV, meals, cleaning and utilities are included in the monthly cost. That is a major selling point of all retirement homes but what about the small things that a person needs? Toothpaste, Kleenex, drinks, snacks, medicine, clothes, banking, new smartp... read more
Breakfast is my favorite meal, not necessarily the time but the food. This morning at the Prairie Rose I arrived about twenty minutes before breakfast started. I had a cup of coffee and read the news from my smartphone. Others were reading the local paper, but I like news from different sources, however, that is a different story. At 8:00 am one of the wait staff started coffee refills, followed shortly by the oatmeal cart. This morning I decided to have oatmeal. With your oatmeal you have a choice of raisins, brown sugar, ... read more
When you first move into a retirement home, in our case the Prairie Rose, you are a stranger. You are hesitant about what to expect, what the rules are both official and unofficial. At mealtimes, when everyone takes a seat, where do you sit? The staff helps with that but to be honest, it will take some time. It is a lot like moving into a new neighborhood except it is in a more confined environment where you associate with other residents daily. At the Prairie Rose we have found the staff and majority of residents go out of... read more
I can’t speak for other retirement homes, but I can for Prairie Rose. A few days ago, my wife was exercising by walking the hallways. She lost her balance and fell, hitting her head on an open door. Head wounds bleed profusely, add blood thinner medication and she was in a very serious situation. The Prairie Rose maintenance man who was nearby heard her fall and came to investigate. He immediately started working on stopping blood loss and continued to work until medics arrived. One of the home health service people, who ha... read more
For whatever reason, our bus driver was not here today. That didn’t stop our busy bee staff, using either personal or rental cars, our staff took residents to doctor appointments or wherever. You can’t find better employees than that – reminded me of my days in the military.
Those of us who live in the Prairie Rose retirement home spend a good part of everyday eating -- about six hours a day. Trip to the dining room, finding a table, getting something to drink, checking the menu, ordering, eating and then trip back to the apartment. It is apparent whoever designed the serving process knew a lot about food preparation and delivery. I am impressed with how the serving process works. Starting times are essential, everything else feeds from that. Meals are served in courses (like the French). Firs... read more
Social Butterfly or Loner a Retirement Home can work for you I am a little bit of a loner, give me a computer with internet access, an e-reader, a quiet spot and I am happy. My wife on the other hand is a real social butterfly, she loves to mingle, play bingo and just do some old fashion socializing. I had some concern that there would be enough activity to keep her happy in a retirement home. That fear vanished quickly. If you like a lot of activity or just be by yourself, Prairie Rose has it – your choice. Bingo (3 time... read more
In a waiting room at a local hospital, a decision was made that our brother (in surgery) needed a place to rehab. Within 15 minutes after googling for help, my phone rang... it was [name removed] from Prairie Rose and within the hour, we took our brother directly there from the hospital. A welcome sign was in place, a furnished room opened and it has been his new home since March!! The entire staff and residents have become our family... caring and sharing. We are grateful.
