The service was slow - food quality and portions were disappointing compared to last time we were there. We left after a few tapas dishes to go to another place to eat. Very disappointing. I really enjoyed the food last time I was there. I hope they fix the quality issue. The bar tender and others were very friendly.
The food was fair. The service was the worst!
The food was ok, although we arrived at 6 pm and they were already out of two of the specials on the menu list. Also, most disappointing, according to their website they had specials of 1/2 price bottles of wine on Mon and Tues nights. We went on a Tues night, but when we got the check we realized that we had been charged full price for the wine. Overall disappointing. The "suckling pig" (such a treat that was when we were last in Seville, Spain) was a tasteless underboiled shank of a full grown pig: if it was suckling, it can only have been the MOMMY pig!! The orzo salad was a mess of parsley, no apparent mint, and no hint of lemon juice that would have given it some zing. I was very excited to work with the tapas menu. My first night in Chicago and first dinner was, sadly, a poor experience. Grossly understaffed. Once my server realized she had neglected me, she was extremely appologetic. Due to the influx of tables, as a single diner, I knew it wouldn't likely get any better, so after one cocktail and eating the scallop special, I asked for my check.
I've been to Nia multiple times before but, on this occassion, the food was not great and the presentation was terrible (e.g., the suckling pig still had pig hairs on it!!). Even the traditionally great items were somehow just okay. I'm not sure if Nia has a new chef but I will not be returning.
Sorry, the food was not good at all. It was very bland. First time I was having paiella and was with my friend who is part Columbian. She has had paiella in Spain, Columbia, and makes her own. She said it was the worst she had ever tasted. We had the shrimp/scallop (which are the baby scallops). The shrimp tasted like they had been frozen then thawed -- very waterlogged with no flavor. The other tapas we had were all just mediocre -- no special flavors stood out to make us say wow, we want to come back here.
We were seated immediately upon our arrival. We requested to be relocated away from the door and were accommodated with no problem. We were impressed with the decor and the service was good. The menu looked good but the dishes were prepared poorly. The mushrooms were undercooked and the crab was very fishy. The chick peas in the calamari were also egregiously undercooked, almost raw. Overall the service was good, the food not so much; and there are too many culinary options in Chicago to warrant a return trip to Nia.
Do not sit at the table directly behind the hostess stand. We declined to sit there and the hostess made her irritation known. I then watched her repeatedly bump into the patron that agreed to sit there. Service was attentive. Complimentary olives were a nice start. Bacon wrapped dates and eggplant with goat cheese were delish. Wish we would have passed on the stuffed mushrooms but the lamb meatballs were tasty.
