The best printer I've ever bought
I've bought numerous (inkjet) printers and scanners over the years. I've hated all of them. I bought a Lexmark printer/scanner/fax combo thinking that it would be nice. I maybe printed 20 or so pages overall before it ran out of ink. In addition, I don't print as frequently and so when I do the ink is inevitably dry. I threw it in the trash. My friend suggested buying a laser printer and so I got this one. I've had this printer for 2.5 years and have had to change the toner only once - this is even with my wife printing out a lot of documents for her Masters courses in college. It's a great machine and handles everything really well. It is extremely easy to set up and will work on Linux as well (Brother provides a Linux Driver). I've used it on Ubuntu and on Linux Mint without any issue - even the scanner works flawlessly.
I can't recommend this printer enough. You won't need another printer (unless you suddenly decide that you really want color). I can't think of any shortcomings other than the following:
- The LED display is not backlit, which can make it hard to read in low-light conditions.
- Does not support wireless, but this is easily rectified with an adapter; I'm using an IOGEAR Ethernet to Wireless N adapter and it works beautifully.
If you're looking for a reasonably-priced printer that actually works (in contrast to junk inkjet printers from Epson or Lexmark) then look no further.
