If using the Harwood Heights location, be prepared to carry all your heavy items by hand---or bring your own dolly/hand cart. Today there was one cart in the entire building, and I walked all the way into the climate controlled side looking for one. The one I saw was being used. A real problem if you're alone unloading.
If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. I strongly advise you to find another storage unit in the area. The management staff (this includes the top mgmt in Utah) are unprofessional and the company policies are only self serving and not in the customer's interest. They attract you with lower fees and then they hike up the rate to over 3 times the original amount and then they have policies in place to help them sell your things, which should be illegal. Additionally, we do need to raise our rent from time to time in order to keep up with rising maintenance costs. I decided to rent a 5x10 foot storage unit from this Extra Space storage location on Wabash and 13th st. The facility is fine but there were some serious discrepancies in the price I was quoted by the salesperson on the phone and the price I eventually had to pay. Alex, the manager at this location, only told me about a $22 "administrative fee" as well as a required monthly insurance which you are required to pay once I was already at the location and at the check out counter. Leah, we do charge a one time administrative fee during move-in. Insurance is optional if you have homeowner's insurance to cover your belongings. We apologize for the miscommunication and will make sure this is addressed.
Despite all the bad reviews I've read online about this company's other facilities, this one is very well run. The people are friendly and helpful and the place is very clean. In terms of the facility itself, this is the best storage facility I've used, and I've used several others. What to watch out for are the financial policies. Be VERY careful! When I signed the lease on 6/8/2006, I was told I would receive both military and student discounts. When I spoke to an employee and manager at the end on August, they told me that it is company policy to offer no more than one discount, and that they don't even offer military or student discounts. They keep records very poorly, as they could not even tell me what discounts the company offered at the time I signed my lease. So, I have no idea if I am overpaying for my storage unit.
