Can't beat a Brother I had this machines' predecessor a few years ago and loved it. Wore the machine out and replaced it with another brand. Bad mistake. Bought another brand in June of this year. Already had to throw that one away. Even though my phone system does not support the fax feature, I went back to the brand that had given me great service for so many years. Printer Good price, easy to set up, scans very well, do not use the fax feature, the print quality is acceptable. CR noted it would be OK and it is, but I would have given it 5 stars had the quality been a tad better. Good machine.
Manual Feeder Is In The Tray Other very similar Brother models have a manual feeder which opens in the back. The 491 requires one to open the bottom tray, remove the contents, and insert the manual item (odd shape, photo blank, etc) in the bottom of the tray. Workable, but inconvenient. Also, I print Avery address labels. Other Brother printers have no trouble with the PC/Word template provided by Avery. Good buy No issues with this printer. It prints well at a low retail price. It’s also a good copier.
Great price and fair value It does what I need at a good price. Not fancy but cheap.
DID NOT WORK HAD PROBLEMS SETTING IT UP. KEPT ON SAYING I HAD A PAPER JAM WHEN I HAD NOT PUT ANY PAPER THRU IT. TECH SUPPORT SAID IT WAS A HARDWARE PROBLEM AND SUGGESTED I SEND IT BACK WHICH I DID.
It's okay when it *works*. I use this printer for regular documents and papers for class and the occasional photo paper print. What comes out is good, workable, frameable, pleasant. What is not pleasant is just using the thing. The printing software on my phone and on my laptop will randomly say the printer is offline, when it totally is not.
