i came to Dr. Mackoul for a second opinion and explained that the surgery would be very simple and less invasive. He also assured me that I would be able to conceive normally and it won't hurt my chances of getting pregnant whereas my last doctor wrote me off and told me that I needed to hurry up and have kids ASAP if not my chances of losing my uterus were high... it's a year later after the surgery and i am doing fine.
He is probably one of the best laparoscopic gyn-onc surgeons. If it can be done laparoscopically he can do it HOWEVER, he like many of the oncologists who deal with this dreaded disease, doesn't have a clue on how to work with the patient, to enlighten her, to give realistic expectations AND hope - to provide the team support that is so desperately needed. There is kind of a pat on the head "trust me" attitude and a real defensiveness if challenged. He obviously cares very deeply and works long hard hours, but ovarian cancer... read more
Dr. Mackoul has a terrible bedside manner. He was unfamiliar with my history even after talking with his colleague who referred me to him. He was rushed and generally seemed disinterested.

He clearly hadn't looked at my history at all before he came in, which is pretty typical, but he didn't handle it well. He was confused why I was there. Then he said, "So, you're done with childbearing, right?" I'm 26 and have no children. What exactly gave him that impression? Instead of looking over my medical history himself, he just looked at the other oncolgist's notes. The point of get... read more
I had a large mass on my uterus which needed to be removed by surgery. When I went to talk to him he said that it may or may not be cancer, but he would not know for sure until surgery. It turned out to be cancer. I am now being treated by Dr. MacKoul. I think he is knowledgeable but he needs to be more available for follow up.
