Get directionsMy father was sent to Balbo after an ER trip led to admission for observation at Scripps-Mercy. He was in Scripps ER because a CT-scan of his head, done because he was falling a lot, showed a subdural hematoma. It was so small that surgery wasn't warranted. Scripps staff didn't state a reason for transferring him to Balboa on the paperwork I saw after the fact, but Balboa accepted him. Without power of attorney I could only analyze his situation from a study of the pill bottles in his medicine cabinet. Of the 8 drugs he wa... read more
Review of Balboa Nursing and Rehab: The first time my mother-in-law went there several years ago we thought it was a decent facility with decent care. She had a room without a roommate, didn't complain about the food, and seemed to get adequate attention and therapy. That is why when she had to go back for a hip fracture last month we choose to go there again. Mistake. It appeared to us they have focused on skilled nursing rather than short-term physical rehab. Location: B In a trendy and pleasant part of Mission Hills... read more
The staff here seem nice but that's about it. My dad was here for about 2 weeks after his hip replacement. The food was not great. The place has a bad odor to it and his room was even worse. I told the staff how bad his room smelled and they said they'd take care of it. The next morning it was the same. Every time you ask the staff for anything chances are 50/50 it will get done if you don't follow up. I asked to have the doctor call me about questions on a Sunday. I was told he'd call me Monday and I never heard from him. I... read more

My father-in-law was brought here after he fell so he could receive rehabilitation. My husband (his son) was provided a tour of the fourth floor and was told he would receive excellent care from a caring staff. As we were leaving, I was told, oh by the way, there was a chance he would be on the second floor but maybe for a day until a bed opened up. The second floor was a hell hole. My father-in-law arrived on Saturday afternoon, I was unable to visit him in Sunday, but got over to visit on Monday after work. The place was a... read more
This is the worst possible facility. We put my 80 year old father here who suffers from Lewy Body Dimentia. We had read some of the good reviews and the staff seemed friendly and attentive upon admission. Within a few days my dads condition worsened dramatically. My mom would be in and out from business and was not there for many meals only to walk in to find him hunched over a tray of food trying to feed himself with a pen, when this was brought to the staffs attention it seemed disregarded. In the week he was there he... read more
FEB 18, 2014 I am a neighbor of this facility and have been dealing with the noise of their broken HVAC system for the better part of a year now. I can only hope that they take better of their patients than they do their facilities UPDATE!!!!! SAT JUNE 7, 2014 The management does not seem to be concerned that the building HVAC is making a loud screeching noise. You can hear it up to two blocks away and it effects my sleep.THE NOISE IS WORSE AND THE CITY STILL HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING!!!!
Balboa Nursing and Rehab has got to be the very WORST place or hospital that I have ever been to, and I have been to a lot. I was checking out a few nursing places and when "JOSH" confirmed that I would get a private room. So I decided to use his services. Upon arrival I was asked by the only doctor (Dr. Herzog) if I could be "examined". I said ok, not knowing that he would actually inspected every little cut, scar and whatever and measuring with some kind of ruler while the nurse took notes. I don,t know about others,but,t... read more
my mother was moved here after hospitalization. she still needed transport to dr's appointments that needed to be scheduled by staff.they forgot to schedule transpot for one appt. which resulted in a one week delay in treatment for cancer. they've also lost her clothing on two occasions and nursing staff is dismissive to family.we've decided to move her to new facility and would never recommend this place.
