Good Enough This label maker works alright, but it is no rival for the Brother PT-18R that I use at home. I purchased this because I wanted something inexpensive (state universities are not exactly rolling in cash these days) that could sit on my desk without taking up much space. I also liked the idea that I could type the labels on my computer keyboard. However, this model is quite limited in what it can do, and I'm not sure that I would buy it again. I would be much happier (probably up to 4 stars, considering the low pri... read more
Tips on minimizing waste of tape on PT-1230PC BACKGROUND: First of all, let me explain why the P-Touch printers do waste the tape in the first place. It doesn't look like a manufacturer's conspiracy to force us into buying even more (already priced ridiculously to begin with) tape but more like a design consequence to me. It's quite easy to figure out once you take a peek at the mechanism with the cassette cover open. The printing thermal head is about an inch before the cutter blade so the printer has to advance the tape on... read more
easy to use and set up For a neophyte it was very easy to set up with the computer. Once set up printing a label is soooo easy. Just turn it on and the computer does the rest. You only type in what you want and then dude it up as you choose. There are many capabilities that are not immediately evident. That makes it far more versatile than I first thought. It will take me a while to use all of the things it can do. My only complaint is the cost of the tape cartridges.
Works with double byte characters I did not see any review mentions about printing double byte characters. I tested it and it works. Essentially what you see on computer screen is what you get on the label. As long as you can manage to install double byte character on your computer, it will print for you. I am using it on Win7 64 bit version.
The 1230PC is great. The software? Not so much... I'll start by saying that the Brother PC-Connectible (USB) Label Maker (PT-1230PC) has been a very helpful addition in my organization efforts. To make a long story short, it simply just works. There's not a whole lot of flash here, and cutting the labels is a manual affair (make sure you have scissors handy), but all-in-all, it's nice to be able to just fire up the included P-Touch software, type in what I need and print. Battery life is very good (I've been using it for abo... read more
After a Sad Start - Sucess! Forget all the review details pro and con about the hardware. It prints a decent label and even with manual cutting, the hardware is satisfactory especially for the price I purchased mine at. The problem is that the software is lousy and making multiple consistent labels is a time consuming nightmare and ultimately unsuccessful. Do not buy. Worthless at any price until the software is brought up to beta level. Update: After spending some time learning the software including using online sources an... read more
Great product This thing works as advertised. I use it to label videotapes for work. I put two lines of text per piece of tape and then cut it in half. Batteries run out pretty fast so I purchased a power supply adapter (after market).
worked as needed I needed this to make 5 labels and cost less than I've spent in dinner
Great label maker for the price... To give this label maker justice you need a couple things first; a need, the software and a power adapter. I purchased this unit for a domain flip on a large IT project. That was my need. I picked up the label unit, a bunch of the wrong sized batteries and a couple extra clear tape cartridges instead of the white ones. Can you imagine going around an office of 80 users, devices and periphery and making a label via the standard method? No way... So the night before the project weekend I bent... read more
