It tends to lean to the side by about 60-degree or so but it still seems to work fine. It becomes an issue if the canister goes sideways or horizontal with the pool surface as then it will break suction and leak air which can damage the pump if left in that position for more than a few minutes. The only things that seem to need servicing are the basket, which must be emptied fairly often, and the bottom rubber one-way valve, which degrades over time.
