We came to celebrate an 89th birthday which is why we had made reservations. The initial service was sub par: you can’t have a host who a) lacks personality and b) doesn’t listen at all …..we walked in at 4:40 and I said “we are early for our 5 o’clock reservation for 8 and gave our name” - his initial response was we don’t have your table ready. We always have very good food & good service. We prefer to sit in the bar & enjoy talking to Rob there. Last night Merideth was a great server. The dissappointment we had were the steaks. So bummed that this was first time our steaks weren't excellent. My filet was ordered medium & the inside was perfect but the outside was very charred, 1/2 of top was black & I had never had that charred blackness on my steaks there before. Our server was great! He was attentive and nice. Our food was below par this time. This is the first time that we have not enjoyed the food. It was just very below average. The onions in the salad were barely cut and there was not dressing on the salad. The filet sliders were just ok. They were very thin and overcooked. This was my first experience with Midwestern fried pork tenderloin. My expectations were high, and when the dish was served I was amazed at the size and presentation of what looked like the ultimate comfort food. Boy, was I disappointed. I had no idea that you could pound a piece of meat that thin. Most bites ended up being primarily breading covered with gravy. I spent the entire meal trying to find the meat. Service was excellent, and the drinks were good. However, I’d stay away from the fried pork tenderloin.

Grindstone was having an off night with us. The waitress was very friendly, but not exceptionally attentive. We ordered a hot tea set up (provided our own decaf tea bag), but she only brought a half full pot of hot water and empty cup. We asked for a refill on the hot water, but it never came. Also, the salad had no dressing (or little enough to be unnoticeable). By the time the waitress returned to our table, we had finished eating and requested th check.

Our experience was just ok. Drinks were good, service was good, crab dip as an appetizer was good, but our dinners weren’t great. I got the blackened chicken avocado sandwich with fries. Fries were better than the sandwich. My friend got the Cobb salad and it was pretty bad. Way too much dressing and blue cheese. Too many red onions. Chicken was dry. Just not a good salad. Oh well.

I like Grindstone. Nice menu and friendly service. What I don’t like is sitting at the entrance to the kitchen. Staff walking on both sides of the table with dirty dishes and it’s loud. Remove the table completely and have a more open walkway to the kitchen.
