Someone on the team chose an appraiser from 200 miles away from our home despite the fact that my home town is bigger and has many suitable appraisers. This resulted in a charge for the appraisal almost 500% higher than the norm. There was a long delay in closing because no one was taking responsibility for what was clearly an error. After a long delay PennyMac absorbed the charge but as a result I was not able to refinance a larger amount because interest rates had changed.
