If you've got a Mac, look for a different scanner! A very problematic purchase. Despite a lot of troubleshooting, it still does not work with my iMac running 10.15.5. Always get "initialize failed" error when I try to open the ds720MobileCapture, and my iMac says there's a driver missing (not included on CD or in downloaded installation software?) so I can't even use it with other software (like Paperless). Not a good scanner for a MAC user I purchased this scanner because I travel quite a lot and I often need to scan documents or receipts. The features I was looking for was small and portable (less than 2 lbs), duplex scanning, color and/or black and white pages, and the ability to create searchable pdf files. PaperPort will not install Buyer beware. I chose this scanner because, among other reasons, the description says it comes with PaperPort pdf editing software, which is on the installation disc, but will not install. When I contacted Brother customer service, they told me that PaperPort is not compatible with this scanner (even though it's advertised as included on Amazon and on the Brother website and is included on the setup disc and referenced in the manual).
On MAC OS (64 bit) - you need to know this ! This does work on my Mac Air Book OS Catalina V 10.15 - - but figuring out how to load the software was a pain. HERE's what I learned (which may save you an hour or two). (1) Do not plug in the scanner cord. (2) go to the apple icon top left and open up and select system preference. Not the most honest company I had asked for and received this scanner as a gift at Christmas 2019. The main purpose was to scan and organize receipts and then upload them into my Quicken Software. After reviewing documentation and web information, I was convinced this was the scanner for me. Great with Older Computers Been using this scanner since June 2018. Bought a new computer (Mac OS 10.15 Catalina) and the scanner no longer works. I have tried all steps laid out on the Brother website to troubleshoot.
Not has good as expected I had high hopes for this scanner based on the review. It does scan both sides of a paper, but the software does not combine multiple pages into one PDF. I have to use other software to do that. The scanner worked on one of my computers but would not on the other one. I was disappointed to find that they only offered email and chat support.
Equipment Okay But Software ... Not So much While the scanner equipment itself works with Linux, you won't be able to use their promised 'Bundled Versatile Software Suite' with Linux as they are only usable on Mac or Windows. Fortunately there are open source scanner software products that will work with the equipment on Linux. Bad Software No scanner is any better that the software provided. The software provided with this scanner is terrible. 4 Programs are provided and only one is duplex capable. The duplex program appears to be very old maybe even from the 1990s. Quite simply it doesn't work work a darn. I do not recommend this product or Brother as their support is also terrible.
