terrible experience just trying to ask a question..I have had several of my clients go there and be very unsatisfied and upset. I was terribly mis quoted by an very inexperienced employee and tried to communicate with the hospital manager..he was worse. they think it is OK to mis-quote people and post false statements on line...not good. i will no longer be driving my elderly clients to this animal clinic..there are to0o many loving and caring vets and clinics in austin..
Embarrassingly rude. I asked for only annual shots for both my dogs so they could be boarded. As had happened previously, the tech tried to convince me to do additional procedures I was not interested in, and I told her "only annual shots, thanks." Dogs went in the back, came back, I paid, and when I looked at my detailed bill after I got home, I saw that one dog hadn't been given all his shots AND I had been charged for a treatment I said I did not want. I went back to the hospital and met with Doug the manager about my co... read more

Ms. McLain, Surprised to see this additional review from your family nearly a year after your last visit. Here is the copy of the email I sent 12/22/2020, the day after your visit: I have removed the following charges: Fecal Test & Heartworm Test for Darwin; and Heartworm Test for Huxley per Ms. McLain's request. Attached you will find: 1) the adjusted items for each dog as it appears in their history. 2) the Returns receipt showing a credit of <139.85>. 3) the receipt today for Darwin's Flu vaccine showing the credit of... read more
Over a year into covid-19 protocols but you wouldn't know it here. I actually liked the actual vet- she was knowledgeable and kind. But I took my two kitties here for an annual checkup and it took over 2 hours from the time i arrived until they finally brought them back to me. Add 20+ minutes to any time estimates they give you while you are waiting in the parking lot. I was told at least 3 times during the appointment that a tech would do something in about 5 minutes. 25 minutes later, I would see the action. I'm talk... read more
Rude and unprofessional vet. The most expensive place in ton. They pressure folks to pay for medications and services they don't need. Won't be returning.
0 stars. Desperately needed to take my dog in anywhere and this is the closest animal hospital to my house. I called and explained how my dog has had diarrhea for the past 36 hours and it's only getting worse. The girl on the phone asked if I had taken my pet there before and then said they only took appointments. Didn't try to help me get one for today didn't even try to send me elsewhere that could help. If that's how you treat a desperate dog parent over the phone I don't wanna find out what you're like in person at your ... read more
Business response:
Elianne C. I am so sorry to hear that we did not live up to your expectations during that one phone call and that we had no appointment available for you on the same day you called. Most people would have thanked us for checking and moved on to the next veterinary hospital on their internet search. Austin Vet Hospital has been serving the pets of Austin since 1971. We are a trusted member of the community and our clients appreciate us. We love to see new clients too! But since the pandemic we have been overwhelmed, as are ... read more
We brought our new puppy into Austin Vet Hospital on a Tuesday for a routine vet examination. She had been acting strange just that morning--not eating and very lethargic. I won't go into the details of the vet appointment, but I will say it was off-putting. The doctor seemed hurried and distracted and initially presented me with a worrying possible prognosis without much more than handing me a sheet explaining what it was. After an x-ray, the doctor told me that my puppy had "growing pains." She said the x-ray showed sw... read more
Disgracefully mercenary. I give my dog trazodone during thunderstorms: otherwise he panics terribly. Austin Vet Hospital gave me one scrip for 20 about six months ago, and, since we've had a lot of storms this spring, we've recently run out: it's not as if I'm constantly dosing him with the stuff, nor is it a dangerous drug in any way. Yesterday, I phoned in asking for a single refill: today they told me I had to bring him in for a visit or they wouldn't let him have the medicine. In ordinary times, a large visit fee for... read more
Business response:
Mr. Lewis, During this COVID-19 pandemic we have been able to accommodate a lot of prescription refill requests for drugs that are for chronic, long term conditions. We have extended these established prescriptions by 2-3 months with the hope that things will be back to normal by that time. We did not prescribe Trazodone to your dog to be used for storm anxiety. We prescribed Trazodone to use as a sedative so that we could handle your dog on subsequent vet visits. The instructions on the label were to give 2 tablets by mou... read more
This is an email i wrote to Austin Vet Hospital the day after my Mearle passed. My review isn't representative of the skill level of the vets that work here. But I cannot recommend a place where the front lines can be so callous. (Also I did not receive a reply) I write to you heartbroken. Mearle, Sadie and I have been coming to you for years. Last night, 10 minutes after 5, I called you hysterical, alone. I know my dog, my best friend Mearle was dying and I didn't have a lot of time. I didn't have time to punch in a number... read more
Business response:
Erin, We were so sorry to hear about Mearle. I wanted to publicly respond to the points you made in your email: 1) Our goal the evening you called was to get you & Mearle to a clinic that could handle your life-threatening emergency. We are not an emergency clinic. We are a top-rated general veterinary practice. 2) The woman that assisted you that evening has 30+ years of experience. She dropped everything to help you; she alerted the emergency clinic that you were on your way and sent them Mearle's history. She is the k... read more
Certainly don't believe the hype... They are "by appointment only" even if your dog is having an EMERGENCY and you arrive at the BEGINNING of opening hours and there are NO OTHER PEOPLE OR PETS THERE. They were willing to see my dog three days from now when she might not be hemorrhaging blood, GREAT! THANKS GUYS!!! How this place has such a high rating is beyond me, they should be called an "upscale pet "reservation only" place", certainly not a "hospital" (a hospital will see patients if they are willing to wait during ... read more
Business response:
We are not an Emergency Hospital and we are sorry if that wasn't clear. We know having a sick pet is stressful and we are sorry if we added to your worry. We work closely with emergency clinics and have their contact information on our door, on our website and in our lobby. For the past 50 years we have been helping the dogs and cats of Austin and we often book out days or weeks in advance. We always try to help, even if that means referring pets to other clinics.
Austin Veterinary Hospital has a 4.7 star rating with 979 reviews.
