Nothing could have been easier than leasing storage space here. I signed up online, a representative called me immediately afterwards to confirm move in date, when I was late to arrived, they called to confirm everything was on track, and when I finally did arrive, they had a fully computerized registration/insurance/leasing process that was quick and painless. I have had a unit at Extra Space Storage on U Street for a little more than a year. Yes it is not cheap and no the hours are not so convenient. BUT, the staff are friendly, and nothing crazy has happened to my stuff. After reading reviews of other storage places in DC, I figured if I wanted to ever use the stuff I had in storage again, this was just about the only Metro accessible place worth doing business with. The people here were really nice and competent. I was moving over the weekend, so I didn't have issues with the access hours. Yes, they do close early, so before you sign up for a unit, make sure that's OK with you! I also signed up online and got my first month free...and since I'll only be there for about 1.5 months AND they'll prorate my second month's fee, this worked out great for me.
The staff was friendly and helpful. They even admired my 2005 cell phone. However, the only reason I came here was to buy boxes, not to make new friends. They were all out of small and medium boxes. Although they tried being helpful by offering a "moving kit" which included these size boxes, I didn't need any more large and extra large boxes or bubble wrap and was not in the mood for dropping $50 on such a kit. I have been a customer of, ESS, since Feb 2020, or there a'bouts. Have had good dealings w/ staff at all times and as far as in store customer service goes I couldn't ask for better personnel / company representatives to deal with. The only issue / discrepancy I have about ESS has nothing to do w/ store staff (whom have always been lovely to deal with) but rather w/ one of your overall company incoming receivables policy. I found many stink bugs everywhere. ALSO, READ THE FINE PRINT IN YIUR LEASE. If you leave garbage, any amount, you will be charged $50. It's in the lease but no where else. It's usery at it's worst. And, they raise the rent EVERY SIX MONTHS. Don't get in over your head.

Rented 10 x 20 in March 2023, now March 2024. Move in rate $145/mth, 2 rate increases since then. Notified today that my new rate effective April 2024 will be $344.00/mth. 237% rent increase in 1 year. I will be moving out this weekend.

The employee encouraged me to pay 4 months in advanced to receive the lowest monthly rate. I paid the 4 months and received my monthly rate in writing. Now the rate has been adjusted to a "market value" which is $100 more. I definitely got scammed.

Do not use any of there locations at all. Was with them at there Southern ave se Oxon hill location since 2018 before self storage plus too over today (both companies are awful). Complain about an aggressive PM and been having issues since. Recently called the main number to request my initial contract to compare with self storage plus as a lot of my customer service requests weren't being honored etc. Been there since 2018.
