This is the worst printer I have ever owned This printer does not print in black when the color cartridges run out. The color cartridges do not last very long either. The genuine brother ink is very expensive and they caution you to only use their ink, not generic. I have had my printer for about 3 months and the yellow has stopped working completely. I have done the cleaning....even the special maintenance mode cleaning. I went through a box (two of every color) running cleaning cycles trying to get the yellow to work. Nope... read more

Don't buy this printer If one color runs out, the printer will not allow you to print (even in black-and-white) until you refill all the ink. They sell the ink for outrageous prices. You can try third party cartridges but Brother often pushes firmware updates that make those cartridges fail.
CHEAP BUT AT A COST Printer works fine. Big catch: if you run out of colored ink, it does NOT print in black/white. And even though I really NEVER print in color, the ink seems to dry out after 5 or so months. Very annoying to have to keep refilling it so I can use the printer for a standard black/white. Buyers be aware, do yourself a favor and get a printer that can print if you're out of colored ink.
Printer is poor quality and will not reimburse if returned. You have to pay to have the printer returned and then they still do not reimburse you.
Giant rip off - designed to waste ink Huge ripoff. Printer will "clean" itself regularly and wastes the ink. It will also not allow you to print in black & white if any of the color cartridges are empty. I only need to print a few pages every few months. I have to by new ink cartridges for every 10 pages I print. As I write this, one of my color cartridges is empty, preventing me from printing out a black and white letter. Requires color ink to print black and white Others have pointed it out, but it helps to keep up the complaints. This printer will not print black and white if any color toner is empty. I got confirmation of this flaw from Brother's tech support person. Through my experience as a firmware engineer (at both HP and Intel), I know that this flaw is due to one of a few reasons, and neither of them are good. 1. Jams all the time We've had this printer for 9 months now. We are constantly clearing paper jams. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of paper we put in it. There is no easy way to clear the paper and it often takes a bit of strength to pull the paper out. And sometimes you can't see where the paper actually jams. Would not recommend this printer.
Piece of crap This machine is hard to install, difficult to keep connected and is very time consuming to set up. I had an MFC-J475DW machine that lasted 6 years and functioned much better. It was less expensive and much better quality. Brother needs to get its act together or Cannon, HP, et. al. will eat its lunch.
