Never have tills on when I finish work, I would assume this is one of their busier times of day however even if I have a full trolley of shopping they expect you to use the self-service counter. I had to Jenga my shopping onto the little black self-serve tray yesterday when two staff happily chattered between themselves near by, they had clearly seen I had a trolley full of shopping yet didn't offer to pop a till on - really poor customer service.
