Surpassed My Expectations!
I was traveling alone for business. I like to eat good food and enjoy a pleasant atmosphere and overall dining experience when I go out. I stumbled upon this wonderful restaurant during an outing my last night in Hilton Head. The menu looked great and the atmosdphere was very pleasant - outdoor diining was available on the waterfront under a shade providing canopy. I elected to dine in doors, not being accustomed to the steamy heat of the South.
My waiter was a young man named Justin - originally from my hometown of Philadelphia (or close enough thereto so that he was able to discuss "all things Philadelphia" with me). He was knowledgeable about the food selections and wine choices. I selected an escargot en coute for an appetizer - simply amazing with puff pastry and incredibly tender escargot! I also selected the Davinci Chianti which was the perfect wine for the main course - an deliciously tender Veal Chop with a Cabernet wine demi glace. This was a special that night and Justin said it was one of the best items on the menu - he was so right! The veal literally melted in my mouth. Although I should have passed on the dessert, I was curious to see what amazing treats the chef would offer - I selected, once again at Justin's recommendation, the Irish cream creme brulee! Magnificent and the perfect ending to a wonderful meal! Without a doubt, this was the dining highlight of my week here; I had been to many of the 5 star restaurants on the island all week, but the presentation, atmosphere and people made this my favorite of the week!
I can't say enough good things about this restaurant - the atmosphere was relaxing with Jazz playing in the backround. The Chef, "Jim", made the rounds to each table several times to ensure that the food was to the dinners' liking. Everyone was friendly, professional and knowleadgeable about the food and wine selections.
A further note . . . the restaurant I originally intended to go to was a at loss when I asked for a table for one - they showed me to a table right near the front door, which for obvious reasons was not suitable to me (in addition, I am a bilateral hearing aid wearer and the location of the table would have made my dining a loud and somewhat confusing experience!). When I asked to be seated at another table, the host said this was the only table for one and all the other tables were for four or more. He was not willing to give me one of those tables, despite the fact that there was no line, it was after 8pm and there were numerous tables available. He suggested I eat at the bar. Compare this to Bistro 17 where I was asked where I'd like to sit (ie I selected the table location) and where, despite the fact that I was a solo dinner, I received much attention from the waitstaff and chef throughout my meal. Chef "Jim" even stopped by my table to thank me for dining at the restaurant.
All around a superb dining experience and highly recommended! If you like great food, this is the place to eat!
