23August 2019 Good Morning, I just thought I would let you know how I am progressing after discharge from Shirley Ryan, June 23rd of this year. I suffered a mild stroke following open-heart surgery, 20th May 2019 and was transferred to Shirley Ryan about three weeks later. When discharged I could walk quite well, 2/3 mile without assistance and have been home ever since ha vinghome therapy. My goal was to pick up my life where I left off and that included playing racquet-ball, which I did for the first-time, yesterday,(Augus... read more

Do not accept any service or evaluation without understanding total costs (they will run up the amount to the insurance co just to hit your deductible and then tell you amount will go down soon - bills weren't received timely so I unfortunately found out costs after I'd already been to a number of sessions). Then you will also get a 2nd bill for a facilities charge. Care was not good enough to justify the over priced cost - go to a privately owned facility who only accepts cash payments and you will pay less and get better c... read more

Business response:

We appreciate your feedback and are sorry for your experience, Kim. At the onset of therapy or a physician visit, patients are free to contact us to request codes so that they can in turn contact their insurance companies to determine out-of-pocket costs. Our billing is structured according to the guidelines and regulations set at the federal level by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. These guidelines dictate that patients receive two bills: one for the physician professional service fee (which includes doctor ... read more

Please improve your appointment scheduling procedures thru central scheduling. Patients should be able to call and schedule without having to wait on hold 20+ minutes and then be told appointment cannot scheduled and someone from the Northbrook office has to call you back. This has been an ongoing issue at Shirley Ryan's. Life is hard enough..... scheduling an appointment shouldn't add to our challenges.

Business response:

We appreciate your feedback and are sorry for your experience, Deb. We're making every effort to increase our Call Center staffing.

My experience with Shirley Ryan Ability Lab this past April has been nothing short of a nightmare. During my stay the therapist communication with me was just about non-existent. The Therapists did not want to be questioned about why something was being done. The Inpatient Speech Therapist was about one of the most condescending, abrasive people I have ever encountered. While the Physical Therapists may have been knowledgeable in their field, they did not confer to discuss my goals with me and how they would be realized. Thi... read more

5 stars for the rehabilitation part. I was hit a tree 3 years ago at 65 mph, breaking almost every bone in my body excluding my face (thank goodness) I was at SRAL for 2 months and then to rehab at that their Northbrook satellite location. Now, while I was at SRAL downtown I had very poor nutrition thank goodness my mom had been experience in the Neurology Field to know that a really healthy diet was crucial to my healing brain

Business response:

We're delighted to read about positive experiences at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Thank you for sharing, Alexa! Thanks for your comments on nutrition as well. Since moving into our new hospital in 2017, we've been able to expand our nutrition services/offerings.

What an incredible facility. I have a friend who's dad is here for rehab and I was so impressed with the facility. The staff is incredible. So positive and encouraging. Just what you would want after suffering any kind of accident. I wish it had more common areas for family and friends to be cozy while staying with or visiting patients. I read that many people have had issues with billing practices here. I can't speak to that since I have never been a patient here myself. My review is strictly based on the structure of the f... read more

DO NOT GO HERE AS A DANCER!!! Wrong diagnosis, refused to run MRI and put me at risk of further injury! Knee injury following an ER visit. I call for a follow up appt saying that I need to be treated as a dancer. I was assured this was performing artists medical program, they know dancers/athletes, "they work with the Joffrey Ballet," etc, etc. I'm on crutches, can not stand on my injured leg. They run the basic manual tests, refuse to run an MRI, we discuss my enlarged thyroid that may or may not be cancer and order xrays o... read more

Check in takes about 45 minutes due to lack of staff. They need all the stuff from your doctor in paper form. Bring everything. Show up early. All the money is spent on architecture.
