Shirley Ryan Ability Lab (formerly RIC - Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, or as I call it, the Rehab Industrial Complex), has been ranked the number one rehab hospital in the United States for 30 consecutive years. It only goes to show that you can fool a lot of the people a lot of the time. Just keep saying you're great, and people will believe you. Anyone who has navigated the institutional arrogance and managerial incompetence of this institution knows exactly what I'm talking about. Do not get me wrong, there are so... read more

Don't be fooled by the glitzy building/ambience, location or by the rooms with nice views of the lake. The medical care here is substandard -- my mother got admitted at Shirley Ryan after a brain tumor removal and immediately contracted infections at Shirley Ryan due to staff negligence and improper medical care (wrong diagnoses, medication lapses, incorrect medication doses, delayed medical care and other serious judgments in error) -- she is back in ICU. As for the physical therapy aspect -- they do 1 hour of that each day... read more

I went to Chicago IL Shirley Ryan Abilitylab and there were a few staff members that were great the Dr is a joke can't give any meds except sleeping drugs. So if you need anything for pain Or medical marijuana card just to try forget going here you would have to see your own Pcp. They have a relaxations drs that will ask you how you feel and if you don't answer the way he wants he keeps asking you until he just agree with him. There were many PT that seemed like they actually listened to you. There billing system SUCKS BIG ... read more

I called Shirley Ryan Abilitylab (SRA), because Dr. Joseph Ihm was at the NMFF. My primary care doctor from Northwestern recommended him and I thought SRA was still connected to NMFF. I called Dr. Ihm's office at SRA. They told me they have my doctor's referral and everything was good. So, I thought I would only owe them a co-pay of $85. I ended getting billed $230 for a physical therapy visit which I was not expecting. Then in addition they billed me another $311 for using their elevator and office space for 35 minutes or s... read more

Stay away for now. They are doing nothing about the Coronavirus. They are not screening us (patients) to see if anyone has traveled out of the country or encourage patients that are feeling sick to stay home. They welcome it. Staff members have got sick and continued to work while sick. One member traveled out of the country to Europe and has been sick since being back and the members hasn't been checked for the Coronavirus because they do not have any test kits. A doctor has decided not to work out there until this calms do... read more

I went to SRA for an ankle sprain, which is modest treatment compared to the conditions they treat there, but I was reassured by my insurance company that it was normally affordable and by SRA that they see able patients for such treatments regularly. They are NOT affordable, and I should have been more skeptical. Because they are an outpatient hospital they double charge you - once for the doctors services (normal) and again simply to cover the cost of the office. This charge was explained to me as being for 'the doctors us... read more

Business response:

Hi Tom, thanks for your feedback. Our billing is structured according to the guidelines and regulations set at the federal level by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. These guidelines dictate that patients who are seen by a physician receive two bills: one for the physician professional service fee (which includes doctor appointments) and one for the facility fee (which includes things like clinic staff, equipment, supplies, etc.). At the onset of therapy or a physician visit, patients also are free to contact us ... read more

We are new patients of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab--the top ranked rehabilitation hospital in America. Formerly the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC), Shirley Ryan is the first-ever "translational" research hospital in which clinicians, scientists, innovators work together under the same roof, surrounding patients, discovering new approaches, and applying research in real-time. Upon entering the building, it literally felt like entering a giant futuristic spaceship, and we were the experiments. The building is clean ... read more

There's clearly outstanding leadership here because everyone from the housekeeping staff to the cafe workers to doctors and therapists is kind, helpful and knowledgeable. Really an outstanding experience.

Be very wary of this place and how they charge patients. We were seen for an evaluation for my daughter who has special needs. After Dawn "confirmed" that our insurance would cover the evaluation we went in. No therapy ever happened later, just a 45 minute evaluation. We then received a bill for almost $800. Multiple calls to our insurance and SRA and we were able to determine that our insurance in face never said they would cover the evaluation. So we are now stuck with a huge bill and we never even received therapy. It's s... read more
