I was adopted in 1969. I could not have asked for a better set of patents. Later when I was over 18 I contacted Spence-Chapin and they gave me all the info they had on my birth family. It was a private adoption and I was not given names. I was happy with the info that I received. The staff that helped me was kind and professional.
Spence-Chapin ruined my life and stole my twins in 1993 using psychological abuse and coercion. I was forced to sign away my parental rights recovering from a brutal c-section, vomiting pain medication and sobbing. I was told if I didn’t sign within 4 days after giving birth I would have to pay the cost of the NICU and would suffer financial ruin, even though the hospital would have worked with me to cover costs. They just kept lying. I was “matched” with a couple with whom I bonded and was told that I “couldn’t let them do... read more
My story is very unique. I can speak from both sides of the fence. In 1969 I gave my son up for adoption and in 1986 I adopted my daughter. Both took place through Spence. In 1969, I was 14. Closed adoptions were the only option. I wrote several letters and sent him a gold cross. I never heard anything. In 1985 my husband and I started an adoption process, ... read more
I am a birth mother. Once the adoption was finalized, it seems like they just forgot about me. I was told I would be provided counseling. 6 session provided and paid by them, and the rest would be on my private insurance. That's fair. I told them up front that I would need counseling right away. I still haven't been contacted to sign up for ANY counseling. I gave birth almost 3 months ago. I was told by my case worker that an "open adoption agreement" would be signed right away by both parties. Saying that I was to receiv... read more
We adopted my son through Spence-Chapin, and I feel like a lucky to have had them by my side through every step of the way. Different than other options, they are still there for my family, my child -- and will be throughout our entire lives. They are a constant resource and counsel, they are the absolute experts in the field of adoption, and a complete and utter blessing to our lives.
