I have been on RealSelf for a few months now researching the possibility of getting a lower face/neck lift. I have been told most of my life that I look young for my age but lately all I can see is my droopy neck and I think it is aging me. I am 53 yes old but I still feel 38 on the inside! I am active and love travel, dance, golf and having fun with my hubby and two daughters (in their 20’s). I just want to match my outside with my inside! Along with reading hundreds of articles and reviews online, I interviewed with five Drs in my area and I am excited that I picked Dr Menachof. His credentials, experience, demeanor, results, and staff (...and I have a couple of clients who are very happy patients) were all part of why I chose him. I just dropped off my down payment and I am officially in the books for April 25, 2018! It’s still a little way off but I am excited to ‘journal’ my experience as I go through it and just wanted to start my story with a couple of ‘before’ shots. I will update again when I go to my pre-op appt in March:)
Updated on 26 Jan 2018:
Just a note about how crazy fast your face can age when you hit menopause. The picture on the left is Augusr 2016. The one on the right is this last September (2017). Just 13 months apart (granted the glasses aren’t screaming ‘young lady’ lol) but I’m looking at my neck and chin/jowls (notice I am smiling more and jutting my chin in the second picture cuz I feel like it tightens up the sag a bit)
AND imo it’s even worse now. I sure hope this procedure turns back the clock like all the reviewers say it does. I started menopause last year (no picnic but that’s a whole other story) and the elasticity in my face went kaput.
Something about finalizing my surgery date got me looking back through my pictures and I feel like I was holding it together pretty good until this last year.
I keep wavering between ‘I’m ashamed of my vanity’ (and my hubby says ‘you know what we could do with that $?!) and then ‘I wanna look how I feel and I work hard and deserve this’ etc...the struggle is real.
Updated on 1 Feb 2018:
Because so many people rely on before/after photos on this site, I just wanted to point out that I have a pretty substantial scar on my chin that has been there since I was 6 or 7 yrs old. (Fell on the playground... knocked out both front teeth!)
I don’t know how it will or won’t be affected by my neck lift but since I have always had it I really don’t notice it anymore and most people think it is a cleft (albeit a lopsided one)
I’m hoping that since I have to be cut under my chin, my PS can just meld old and new scar together to make one. Or possibly it will get pulled back? I think I will ask my Dr about this:)
Updated on 12 Feb 2018:
I’m still about 10 weeks out but I thought I’d just share this observation...
I think I read in another journal on here about how telling people what you are planning (Cuz you’re excited!) can backfire and make you feel
1. Vain
2. Selfish
3. Wasteful
Etc...
At best I seem to get ‘you’re crazy.. you don’t need a face lift! Nobody notices that stuff!’
And one kind soul said ‘you’re willing to go under the KNIFE!?! For you’re LOOKS?!’ What if you die?
Makes you want to not tell anybody ( because well...I do see their point so it makes you sink a little inside)
Like I said I do struggle with the vanity of it
I do have to say I have a very sweet husband who will be supporting me all the way through this even though he says (in a very loving way) that he likes me just the way I am:)
Here’s to my dear husband! Thanks for all you do!
I am equally nervous and excited as the day grows nearer!
Updated on 5 Mar 2018:
Im going back to my PS to see how much more $ it will be to get an upper blepharoplasty because I’m really noticing my droopy eye folds. They drape over my eyeliner so you can hardly see it. And smudge it all onto my top lid!
I’m worried now that I am picking apart my face by looking at it too much but I have also seen many reviewers say they wish they had done their eyes at the same time. (for cost savings and concurrent healing)
If it’s not too much more, and my doc thinks it’s a good idea I may get my eyes done too. What do you think?
Updated on 10 Mar 2018:
So I saw my doc yesterday and he said I could wait on the eyes. That they are not so bad yet and to wait 4-5 years until I consider doing them.
Actually he said the problem is that the folds in the skin are not bad enough for a blepharoplasty alone and that I would get the best results with both a endoscopic brow lift AND a blepharoplasty in combination but it’s not time yet. Some days (like when I took those photos) are worse than others, overall I’m not that unhappy with my eyes yet.
I’m going to take his advise and just do my lower face for now. Also this gives me time to save the $ it will cost which is another 5k
He and his patient coordinator Ginger sat with me for an hour and answered all my questions and quelled my growing fears. I am confident in his extensive knowledge and his experience (he only does faces) As well as his exceptional bedside manner.
Time marches and my date keeps creeping ever nearer:)

Here it is... that thing we all do when we start thinking about surgery..lol
This is all I hope for in the end:) smooth neck and to see my jawline again!
Happy St Patty’s everyone!
40 days and counting!
Updated on 8 Apr 2018:
Ok. So I’m about 2 weeks away from the big day. Yikes! I’ve read that this is when the real anxiety starts and I can tell you it’s true! I’m very excited but also sooo petrified of something going wrong! I don’t hate my face, I just want a ‘pick-me-up’ .. you know, like a rested youthful appearance. So if something should go wrong (like bad scarring or nerve damage) and I lose the face I’m used to seeing (and using!) I would be so upset with myself and the dreaded vanity!
I went in today for my pre-op and had to sign all the paperwork including all the possible negative outcomes... so I guess it got me thinking.
Anyway. I’m forging ahead and so grateful for all the lovely ladies and gents that have gone before and shed a light on the realistic expectations of healing. I feel like I am forewarned and better prepared to be PATIENT with the healing process.
I got all my meds and have stopped taking my supplements and my cholesterol statin (apparently it is contra-indicated to the anesthesia and pain meds)
Started eating lots of pineapple and got some bromelain and arnica I will start 3 days before.
I have my ‘healing nest’ all set up including my wedge pillow and camelback bladder for drinking lots of water! I’ve been ‘practicing’ sleeping on the wedge... not too terrible but not my ideal (side sleeper) I’m going to put it away for now so I get the best rest I can before surgery. I’ve got my neck/travel pillow and ice pack too!
I put lots of documentaries on my ipad (love ‘em) and books too! Any recommendations? I’m gonna try to enjoy this time off as much as possible.
My hubby got a low salt cookbook and will be preparing me lovely (soft) meals. And my sweet pup Maisy will be my cuddle companion.
I think I’m ready!

Here are some more ‘before pictures’ taken this morning. (Sorry..still have yesterday’s mascara smudge lol)
Left profile, right profile, front straight on (RBF)*, front from slightly low angle, front from lowest angle.
*resting [RS bleep] face
Updated on 19 Apr 2018:
Whenever I start to get nervous and unsure I just revisit my ‘before’ photos and I get invigorated to do something about it!
I can’t tell you how many times I have read on RS “I’m so glad I did this” and “should’ve done this sooner”. As well as things like “all the worry and nerves for nothing....best thing I ever did!”& “hang in there, it’s so worth it” Etc....
Just coming on RS and reading about and seeing others results helps me through a lot of my qualms:)
Here are a few more “befores”:
I’ve heard them referred to as ‘uglies’ on here..I wouldn’t say anyone’s befores were ugly but I do get why people hate posting them for the world to see. I started this review so long ago I really can’t show you anything but the ‘pre’ pictures! One more week and we’ll get to the nitty-gritty!
In the last photo you can see all the sun damage on my chest. I am doing BBL
to reduce the darkness/redness/creping. I will have a total of five treatments over 6-8 months. Doing it on my face too but will have to take a break til my FL heals. I’ll show y’all how that turns out too..I’m getting that done at Ideal Image. I’ll probably right a separate review for that:)

Last day at work...One more comfy sleep before the dreaded wedge! Going to try to take lots of pictures tomorrow. See ou on the other side!
Updated on 25 Apr 2018:
At about 6 hours. Just woke up. No pain yet. Drains sre filling up. No nausea, doc gave me a patch that’s supposed to last 3 days.
Updated on 26 Apr 2018:
So glad to be on the other side. I have had little to no pain so far... I have been taking meds every 4 hours (Percocet) and no nausea because of patch. Pretty much just sleeping 90%of time
Hubby wakes me up with oatmeal or applesauce to take Rx and empty drains
Can’t see my old scar anymore...after over 35 yrs that’s pretty weird.
Get my mummy bandage off tomorrow and drains out. I’m so glad I got the drains.. can’t imagine where it would all go without them
The actual surgery was a breeze. He said it was just under 4 hrs. + about 1.5 in recovery (I’m a good sleeper!) All I remember is getting from the gurney to the OR table and then it felt like waking up ten minutes later. Car ride home was fine. Can’t recommend those nausea patches highly enough!
I’m happy to sleep the next few days away Doc gave me ambien but haven’t needed it yet. Sleeping propped up isn’t as hard as I thought...I have the wedge + like 8-9 pillows all around me! Camelback bladder is a God send! I am soooo thirsty and it has been so easy to get to the hose rather than sit up and feel around for a cup of water.

Apparently I’ve worn out my nursing staff
Updated on 27 Apr 2018:
Had my bandages taken off this morning. Nurse said it would sting a bit but it was noting... maybe it’s because I have no feeling in my neck:)
Also my patch wore off sometime in the night and I woke up puking... yuk. Got some new nausea meds.
Feel ok now but I have a doozy of a headache. Probably has something to do with not wearing my glasses and the meds.
Very swollen, puffy around my ear stitches. Not too badly bruised. Been popping arnica like candy.
I think the scar under my chin smoothed out nicely and looks great. Like I’ve said.. I’ve never seen my chin ‘cleft-less’
Here are today’s pics...
Updated on 30 Apr 2018:
Not much to report. Still very little bruising. Been popping a lot of arnica Montana
Some swelling. Wearing face bra 24/7.
Got to take a shower today...did wonders for my mood. It’s hard to sit and do nothing for hours. I have had a doozy of a migraine/headache from yesterday AM. Probably from sleeping so much and just laying here. Asked Dr M if I could take my sumatriptan (migraine Rx) and he said ok so I’m feeling a little less like a vice around my head. But I’m taking SO many pills now! Jeez. I still have no appetite but force crackers with pills so I don’t throw up.
Im trying to be patient and not look at my face too much. Now is the time to take care of and pamper myself, not obsess over results. So I simply stay away from mirrors.
My sleeping pills are kicking in...

Not noticing any real change Just slow steady healing. Still sleeping upright. Shower everyday. Wear bra 24/7. Don’t need pain pills anymore. Mostly just so ITCHY. I still take one Percocet and an ambien at night so I can sleep through.
Will see Doc in two days. My only concern when I look at my face are the long pucker lines at the bottom of each ear. But I am not gonna get all worried yet as I’m sure it will irk itself out
Left side worse than right
Updated on 1 May 2018:
Right side doing much better than left side. Much more swelling and ‘swept’ look on the left and a weird ‘pinch’ at the base of my ear. Still not too worried cuz I know at only 6 days there can be all kinds of lumps and bumps and uneven healing.
I see my PS in two days and will ask about it.
Still barely any bruising. Only using pain pills at night to sleep.
Tightness around neck is like wearing a turtleneck. Feels weird but not painful or really bothersome.
Already stir crazy... got up to change sheets and do a little light housework and realized very quickly that was too much... dizzy and ear throbbing. So trying to take it easy.
Updated on 2 May 2018:
Hubby took some super close-ups so I could see stitches. Sorry so shiny...he had just slicked them all down with triple antibiotic ointment! (Which I think may be causing me to have acne by the way...I’ll deal with that later- better than an infection!)
Feeling better everyday. I see Dr. M tomorrow.
Last picture is the ‘dent’ by lower left earlobe.

We are having a beautiful spring day here in the Rockies and I’m headed to my sister in law’s for a little dinner party. Feels good to be outside. Was getting very stir crazy. Sill don’t look like myself but definitely getting better day by day.
Lots of feeling returning to my whole face which is good and bad cuz now it hurts and iches like a SOB! Anyway I’ll post more later

Look at that profile!
Still a little swollen but I am loving my jawline!
Updated on 7 May 2018:
Both ears and left side of face and behind ears are still noticeably red and swollen. Getting the big stitches behind my ears out today.
Doc says it will get less red and irritated when the body isn’t trying to fight the ‘foreign objects’ (stitches).
Ears have regained almost all feeling. Still feel huge and super itchy. Under chin is still completely numb.. Neck is still like wearing a tight turtleneck

We are having THE most beautiful weather here in Colorado! Out enjoying it on the patio. Before picture is from about 6weeks ago. After is just now-almost 2 weeks out. I still see swelling but no one else does...I am starting to think I will be very happy with results and I tend to be a bit of a pessimist when it comes to believing things will all be great...not too much of a pessimist or I would never have had the faith to make the leap...I guess I am saying I feel confident I picked a really good surgeon and I believe I will continue to look better every day (it hasn’t even been two whole weeks) so I am feeling content and filled with GRATITUDE!

This is an actual photograph of my 22 year old daughter (she does make up tutorials and this one was how to look like a comic book character) I thought it was so cool I took a picture and had it blown up! Anyway... that’s my former jawline and I think I got pretty near it for being an old fogey!
Updated on 15 May 2018:
Tomorrow will be 3 weeks and I’m going back to work... could’ve gone back over a week ago but since I took the time I decided to enjoy it:)
I’m still loving the results. Kinda wish I had done my eyes cuz now that’s where I see age (never happy, right?) but I’m getting my lash extensions back on today so that should camouflage some of it! Since I haven’t been working I haven’t tried to do my face yet... should be interesting cuz I’m still quite numb in areas.
Still have to wait 3 weeks to cover to this gray hair!
Also I gotta do something about my décolleté! Too much sun worship in my teens and 20’s (don’t do it kids! Not worth it!)...anyone have recommendations on how to improve this area?

Today marks 3 weeks since surgery and my first day back at work. Got home and my sweet husband had a root beer float for me on the patio!
I really felt good enough to go back over a week ago but took the time anyway. Got a lot of oohs and aahs from coworker and clients which felt really nice and I’m not even at my final result yet.
I take pictures every day even if it seems like nothing is happening...it’s cool to go back and see the change over time
Still numbness and some lumpiness (different every day) and I still see swelling at the ears, but I am confident it is doin it’s thing and will all even out in time
Updated on 17 May 2018:
Ok so now that swelling is diminishing, I see all kinds of dents and lumps happening. Dr says this is totally normal. Fat and swelling move as you heal and soluble stitches can create lumps. I’m still confident in a great outcome but it is unnerving when your face does weird stuff.
I was told by Doc and other reviewers that your real results are 3-4 months out (sometimes longer) and all these weird things that come up will resolve themselves. So I am not worried:)
Posting pictures to show that it doesn’t look perfect every day
Updated on 22 May 2018:
Now that swelling isn’t hiding some of the healing process it’s like a different neck every day. Some days it looks great and some days I find a new dent or new lumps ...right now I’m seeing prominent lines on my neck but it’s still early days so it’s ok.
Just putting pictures out there for informative purposes.

So I’ve said it’s like a different neck every day and here is another example.
My right side has a crease from my ear to jawline that looks like the elastic strap to a party hat.
Just taking notes and keeping track of these things so we all can watch what happens in real time.
I’m still staying positive that it will all work itself out in the end. I’ve said in other posts that I don’t sweat the small stuff and of coarse I worry a little but mainly I want people to see exactly how it is.
Thought while I’m on here, I’d show you stitches progress too. While taking those I found another weird thing! I’ll keep updating when I can... I’ve got a lot of free time on my hands this weekend so you’ll hear from me soon!

Swelling of some kind of gland behind my right ear. I’ve decided to get the wedge out and sleep elevated to see if it helps.
Updated on 27 May 2018:
Just want to say that although it may seem as if I’m being ‘nit picky’ about minor things I am just pointing out what to expect when healing. I believe all of these things will heal themselves away. I’m in no way unhappy with my results so far... although immediate perfection would be nice, it’s rarely the case and I’m posting pics to show it takes time and patience.
Overall I know I look way better than I did before and it’s just going to keep getting better ! x~Kim

Updated on 29 May 2018:
No change to speak of in terms of how it looks but I did want to say over the last couple of days there has been a steady change in how it feels. I am getting the feeling back under chin and jaw (a good thing) but now I am feeling pain and discomfort again. I’ve noticed that when driving it is harder to turn my head when backing up or turning at intersections because I really feel the pull. It is hard to get comfortable to sleep because I feel snapping and zapping sensations (some have described this as the snap of a rubberband) and also pulling sensations and I am constantly worried I may pop a suture. I have been making all these same motions with my head all along ( just couldn’t feel it) so it is unlikely that anything I am doing now would do any damage but I am much more aware of how I move now.
Here are today’s pics.. no noticeable aesthetic change and one very unflattering neck/chin photo taken from my lap:)
(I take a lot of these photos in my car while on break ... somewhat uncomfortable taking selfies at work)

Not the worst thing... but if it doesn’t go away I will probably have a filler done to even it out
Updated on 2 Jun 2018:
So when they say avoid salt....
Don’t know if it was the wine or the salty meal last night but woke up very puffy and swollen. I’m sure it’s not necessarily to do with the surgery but it’s so true!
Feeling still steadily returning. Less aware of pulling but stills feels tight. Slept much better last night.
Also I am watching to see if my tragus will return to normal. They were small and triangular before and now elongated and blunted. Kind of a dead giveaway if your paying attention. Again for me not as big a deal as my hair mostly covers and I’m sure they will improve with time. But something to consider if you wear your hair short.
I’ve read that if you have the incision in front of the ear your tragus isn’t affected but you run the risk of a more noticeable scar.

Not much change to speak of. Looks to me like the swelling went down a bit more on my left side than my right. Started massaging my scars a bit today to mitigate bumpy/toughness. Going to get a lymphatic massage next week. Feeling super itchy as the feeling returns but I’m still numb enough to not quite be able to ‘get’ it! Annoying
I have actually slapped my ear a couple of times:)

Today’s pics.
The dimple on my left jawline appears to be diminishing.
Something that looks like maybe a salivary gland appears to be a tiny bit swollen on that side.
And my original ‘cleft’ scar is becoming more apparent.
I am looking in to ways to improve my skin tone... the dark spots are eww:/
Maybe a retin-a regimen? IPL?
Updated on 8 Jun 2018:
Here’s something I bet no one has discussed on RealSelf.
Since my tragus is swollen and blunted, my earbuds do not stay in securely anymore! (Still waiting to see how they turn out BTW) but I found a simple solution...get the ones that have the silicone mold that fit into external concha. They are very comfortable and work great!
Just a tip for those who may be suffering from the same frustration:)
Thank you to everyone who has commented and complimented! I try to read them all but it is sometimes hard to see where they are! All the support has been truly appreciated and made this process so much easier!

Scar behind right ear started to keloid a little bit. Saw Dr last week and he injected steroids. He is confident that scarring will disappear given time. He explained in good detail all the stages of scar healing and what happens to skin as it heals itself. It is still early and I will wait it out but he has assured me that if I need/want scar revision after a realistic wait he will be there for me but give it six months and it should look great. That imo is the sign of a great doc! Everyone heals differently and I’ve read enough reviews to know patience is key!
Updated on 26 Jun 2018:
My Dr’s office sent me my official before and afters. This was at 8 weeks
Updated on 1 Jul 2018:
10 weeks and all is well. Inflammation of scars is gone. No more itch. Keloids look better after steroid injection. I’m thinking I’m still going to need a scar revision on my left tragus as it looks lumpy and weird but will wait til 6 months. I wear my hair down anyway so can’t really see it unless you’re looking:)
Updated on 26 Jul 2018:
Hi all! Thank you for all your comments and compliments! I have been having a hard time navigating where all the comments go.... my notifications take me to another woman’s review for some reason so I don’t see them unless I read thru my whole review and comments sections! But I’ve seen a few and I appreciate the feedback!
It’s been 3 months. My scars are getting better but I’ve had some hiccups. I developed some keloid scarring and had to have steroids injected in them. I am going to have a scar revision on my left tragus as it healed with some lumpiness. (In a few months)
I’m still overall happy with the improvement. Here is what my scars look like today
:)
Also I just want to add that it has been very uncomfortable as the nerves return...something I haven’t seen in other reviews. It seems as if people don’t comment on how long it takes to feel normal again. Lo
LOOK better but FEEL like Frankenstein. It’s like I am all fastened together again and it’s a weird sensation. I have to look in the mirror to reassure myself I don’t look butchered... I know it will improve with time but it (in my case) has not been as quick s it appears in other’s reviews. Just be prepared to feel strange for quite some time. I’m hoping I don’t feel this way at a year out!

I’ve had several people ask about the scarring around my ears so here is a current picture of my ears...
Not perfect but not bad.
I never wear my hair back so tightly that they are too noticeable, if I wear my hair up there are usually tendrils that fall around my ears but mostly I wear it down.
Updated on 10 Oct 2020:
This is how I generally wear my hair so any scarring is around my ears and neckline are inconsequential. I encourage anyone that hates their neck as much as I did to go for it!
