Absolutely dreadful. Dismissive of all of our concerns
If I could give Van Doren a zero star rating, I would. My family member was in crisis, and he made fun of him, told him to calm down when he was upset for being made fun of, and diagnosed him without even talking to him. I am sickened that he is a person people have to see when they are at their most vulnerable state.
Meeting with Dr. Van Doren was truly the worst experience I have ever had with a healthcare provider. He was rude, arrogant, condescending and falsely accused me of 'just trying to get addictive drugs from him'. He then prescribed a medication without asking or even informing me that he had done so. The nurse on duty at Regions had to explain the new medication, answer my questions, and provide the patient education that should have been done by him. Dr. Van Doren is now in St. Paul where I presented myself at the ER at Regions following 35 years of depression that I had FINALLY decided to address after it has become more extreme, more frequent, and with regular thoughts of suicide. It took a LOT of courage to do this and go into lockdown but I know that my life depended on it. The process and staff at Regions was exceptional and were compassionate and thoughtful as I was processed in and began the evaluations. Extremely condescending. Makes you feel like an idiot for having any thoughts or feelings. Talks to you like you're a misbehaving toddler, not an adult. Doesn't matter how you explain anything, he'll jump to his own conclusions. Biggest waste of my time, made me feel worse.
The Dr. is condescending and abrupt if you catch him on a GREAT day. If you work with him keep your problems to yourself and be very limited in what you say. When I honestly disclosed how I had been feeling he was mean, sarcastic and combative--appalling! Cannot remember ever having a similar experience (unless you consider grade school bullies). The idea that someone in mental health would treat anyone like this is unthinkable. Ask around--this Dr. is well know for all the wrong reasons!
I had a terrible reaction to the medicine he put me on. His office was totally unhelpful and refused to speak to any family members even though I was unable to speak with him. Would never go back to this man.
I originally scheduled a meeting with Dr van doren for 04/01/09 at 8am. The receptionist phoned me 2 days prior to inform me that the Dr. had an emergency and asked if i could meet on 04/01/09 at 5 pm. I agreed. I called the office at 4:30 pm on the big day to make sure i was scheduled properly. The automated system said " it was after bussiness hours" ( Dr dorens website lists office hours are from 8am to 12pm and 1pm to 5pm) The automated system went on to say that sometimes meets are scheduled after buss hours. A shoddy, inattentive practitioner; failed to record a med. he previously put me on, then put me on another med. that was contraindicated with the unrecorded one, nearly causing a fatal overdose. An excellent "caregiver" — if you happen to be an orchid. If not, good luck to you.
