I had hip replacement surgery with Dr. Merriman, and couldn’t be more please with my care. Everyone I have come in contact with in his office, has been very helpful and kind. Dr. Merriman is not only very knowledgeable but a great listener to your concerns in regards to your health needs. When it came time for my surgery, he explained the whole process in great detail. I had broken my humerus bone in 3 places, shattered my rotary cup and when Dr Merriman told me my options I must have looked like a deer caught in the headlights. In the most sincere of voices he said, “ If you were my mother I’d do this.” From then on he continued to treat me with the care and concern of a son. I have very mixed feelings about this doctor. He did acknowledge the damage done to my knee because of a fall on a hiking trail (3 ligaments and meniscus torn), but didn’t offer much therapy or any indication of repairing ligaments or the meniscus during the 2 months following my accident. He did say the ligament damage might ‘repair on its own’, but didn’t give me much relief for pain and swelling. He did indicate possible meniscus repair needed if it didn’t heal after about 4 months. Over 9 mo. ago I saw Dr Merriman for hip pain. His idea of treatment was one more joint cortisone injection. Concluding, “It must not be your hip.”After consulting with 3 additional surgeons, I now have a correct diagnosis and will be having my hip replaced, prior to spine surgery.
Met with Dr Marriman yesterday at SCOI in Bakersfield. He reviewed the MRI and stated he had no answers for why there was knee pain. When mentioning problems with the knee cap he begrudgingly did an exam and was condescendingly pushing on painful areas stating that’s not the patella. His conservative “treatment” he recommended was “push through the pain.” That treatment plan was unacceptable to me so a knee brace and pain medication was requested because there is a problem even if the MRI showed only unexplained swelling, a ... read more
Dr. Merriman took excellent care of me in the hospital during my emergency surgery and during all follow-up office visit. Always pleasant and takes time to answer all my questions.
I have seen multiple doctors at SCOI over the years, and have found all of them to be very pleasant and helpful. Unfortunately, I can not say the same about Dr. Merriman. He was very rude and dismissive. I would not recommend him to anyone.
