customer service is always 'sketchy', at best. however, i had a pleasant encounter with donald. i can tell he prides himself in providing excellent customer service to the best of his ability. keep him so he can model for his coworkers. thanks.

Constantly hiking up the rent. introductory rate of 110 goes up to 248.00 very quickly. Also, have been treated very poorly by the staff. Lots of very seriously crappy attitude and waiting around if you need any help. Very very unpleasant. Do everything within your power not to get a storage unit. Sell your stuff or just give it away. The regret you will feel giving mean people your money every month burns deep in your soul. Don't fall for it.

MOUSE AND PRICE HIKES EVERY 6 MONTHS I've been storing my stuff here for one year and I have received now my second notice that my monthly fee will be increasing. They lured me with a low monthly rate and have now increased by $40 a month, amounting to nearly $500 a year. Seeing this echoed over and over again by other clients, this is clearly their regular practice. Get ready for a surprise rent hike every 6 months. So this is the scam: Set you up with a super monthly rate for the first 6 months (they may even try to talk you out of a year, because that means they have to wait longer to start raising the rent), and you get a little card in the mail that says "surprise!" you didn't read the fine print on the contract - but we're allowed to raise the rent on you by an obscene amount every 6 months or so. My employer rented a 550 sq. foot (10' x 55') storage unit in this location's now-closed annex for 4 years to store inventory and archives. In those 4 years, our rent increased by 24%. Also, Extra Space improperly charged DC sales tax to my tax-exempt employer for some time. When I notified Extra Space, they stopped charging us DC sales tax, but Extra Space never refunded the sales tax that was improperly charged, even though I requested it (we had the same problem with Pepco and they refunded all the sales tax they had impr... read more
What a scam. First, I was encouraged because the facility is very clean and secure-looking, and the staff seemed very professional and courteous. So far, so good. BUT, suddenly five months after I rented the unit, my monthly rate has increased nearly 50% (more than $50/month)! Seriously shady business. After luring you in with a decent online rate--they jack up the price a few months later.
I want to give Extra Space a higher rating, but I'm afraid my most recent experience won't allow it. I secured a unit to accommodate my belongings while on a multi-month trip out of town. The unit is fine, the staff is fine, no real problem there. While out of town, Extra Space decided to raise the cost of the unit, which they are totally allowed to do with 30 days notice. I'm not sure how many people who have posted glowing reviews of the facility have had to store their items for a long period of time (in my case about 13 months). It is true that the move in experience was a pleasant and smooth experience. My issue with this place came when i started to receive rate increases every three months. They reel you in with a good rate and once you're nice and comfortable you start getting notices for rate hikes every 3-4 months.
