About this business

About Us We've recently changed our name! In the video below, Melanie explains where we've come from, and why we're moving forward with Taurus Academy. Taurus is a “home grown” Austin company—literally! William and Melanie McLeroy started the business out of their East Austin home in 1994 and have been working with Austin-area dogs and their families for over twenty years. We provide excellent care for dogs while improving their behavior as well as keeping them happy and safe. We are interested in learning—of course about... read more

Taurus Lamar uses crates! – The majority of the dogs at Taurus Lamar are in crates. The large kennels are used to double up dogs. Owners are not notified unless they inquire. You may think you are getting a run when you make a reservation for a large dog...think again. This is a place that started with great intentions but has obviously not kept up with growth. We are done!!

Yes it is true, Taurus Lamar has Air Kennels in the hallway and a room with Air Kennels stacked double with the larger Air Kennels at the end of the row. I have been boarding my pet at Taurus since 1998 but asked to look at...

Our "tails" are wagging... – The first time I dropped my pooch off at Taurus on South Lamar, I felt a bit weary, only because I have never trusted my dog with a complete stranger. Little did I know that I had nothing to worry about! While I was away for one week, I called everyday to get the status of my dog and they said she was doing great. When I came back, she looked vibrant and happy as ever! We will happily return!

Overcrouded, most dogs in crates We just got back from touring the Lamar location. The dogs where all indoors at the time we where there and where packed in, most in crates. What appeared to be the original kennels(permanent structures) were about 4 x 6 and had two large dogs in each. Stacked on top were smaller portable kennels(the plastic crates most use to travel with) and had smaller dogs. They even had a small hallway stacked up with about 8 kennels. I will note they had portable ventilation blowing into these kennels u... read more

Lamar - If your dog likes being crated . . . . . . then this is the place for you. They have no indoor play facility, therefore they have to take the dogs outside to play in shifts. They cannot or will not tell you how much time your dog spends out of the crate. From the way my dog acted when I picked her up, I would have to guess most of the day was spent in the crate. They never answer the phone and do not return phone calls until late evening. This is a popular place despite its major flaw, so you must book early. On the ... read more

Metric is great; avoid the Lamar location – We go to several doggy day cares and like others better that let the dogs play all day (and then sleep at home at night!). Our dogs have always been happy and come home tired from the Metric location, even though they are in kennels some of the day. The staff are so friendly. However, we've stopped going to the Lamar location. Our dogs would always come home hyper, like they had been caged up all day. For the money, it wasn't worth it at that location. We've only used the McNeil on... read more

My dogs are happy dogs! – Taurus training on S. Lamar is fabulous. They have helped my rural dogs go from very unsocialized barker/biters to less stressed, more relaxed around other pups, able to play in groups with other dogs, and generally more obediant pets. My dogs love going and cannot wait for me to get up and get dressed every morning so we can all get in the car and go to Taurus. The staff are attentive, obviously good with dogs and are willing to supply any info I need about my two. When I see other people dropping ... read more
