Returning Fri., Sep. 1, 2023, the Burning of Zozobra is a historic New Mexico cultural event staged annually by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe on Labor Day Friday as a fiery end-of-summer tradition. Zozobra was created by Will Shuster, one of "Los Cinco Pintores," a group of five artists who came to NM in the 1920s. Shuster’s creation first appeared in a 1924 backyard party as a 6-ft. effigy. I was trapped with hundreds of people in a gated area, after they scanned our tickets... they started the event early with no more than a Facebook post at 9:07 about it starting at 9:15... and the train and shuttle took over 2 hours to get us to the gate, then we get to wait hours in the rain for a departing train that still left “on time”.... the event organizers should be embarrassed with how poorly they managed the weather, travel and people they decided to block at the gate..

This is the worst managed event I've ever been to. Gates were open when we arrived, then closed as soon as we made it through security, leaving hundreds of paying customers corralled in a parking lot during the event. They're trying to blame the weather for this, but there is no correlation between a little rain and locking people out. Absolutely ridiculous.

Poor management leads to hundreds of paying attendees not being allowed into this disaster of an event.

This event is a total scam. We paid for our tickets and got them scanned, only to be blocked out from the actual event. The event organizers literally blocked off the gate so no one could get into see Old Man Gloom. Funny how the event organizers are now claiming they were at capacity, but they still took peoples’ money and scanned the tickets, knowing full well they were not going to let anyone in. Save your money and don’t give these scam artists anything more. They already stole money from hundreds of people, and honestly... read more
