The Goldilocks of Golf Courses on Hilton Head
My wife and I visit the island a couple of months each year so I’ve had the good fortune to play most of the public courses on and off the island. Typically, I play the Sea Pines courses because they usually have the best conditions, but this trip they were closed for maintenance and I had already played Old South, RTJ, and Oyster Reef, so I decided to give the Fazio course a try. I was lucky enough to get a 7:30 tee time and was out alone on a foggy cool morning where I couldn’t see the ball for more than about 100yds. After about 7 holes it cleared up, but it made the morning memorable. Fortunately, the grounds crew does such an excellent job of clearing leaves and debris that I never lost a ball. They also could not have been more polite and professional moving out of the way as I quickly caught them doing their morning maintenance. This is a difficult course. It’s tight, but not overly so. On a cool wet morning, the ball wasn’t flying very far, so the holes played long, but not too long. I’m a 12 and was hitting hybrids into most of the greens so scoring was a challenge, but it made you think your way thru the course and use every club in the bag. Where the course really shines is on the greens. They were in perfect condition. However, you better take a moment to read the greens, because they are fast and have more break in them than at first glance. There is no such thing as an easy three footer. They aren’t like Donald Ross courses where your ball will roll off the green if your approach shot is 5ft off line so you won’t get overly frustrated. They are fair but a true test of your putting ability.I played from the blues which boast a 142 slope and a rating of 72.5 from 6,534 yds yielding a course handicap of 18. I ended up shooting 17 over, played 18 holes in 2 hrs and 35 minutes and couldn’t have been happier. I still love Atlantic Dunes and Heron Point, but the George Fazio course at Palmetto Dunes is every bit their equal. It’s not too hard, not too bland. It’d just right.Put this course on your must play list. You won’t regret it.
