The hair color of roots is very good. The service for highlights is not consistent. Some of the staff do great work and others are clearly not experienced. So, the process and the results can be very different depending on the stylist. In making an appointment it is not clear how to get a particular stylist that you know can provide a good result. I love this concept. The color is gentle, lasts well, and looks great. The location is super convenient, and while no hair color is fast, I'm generally in and out within 90 minutes. I use the plan where I can get my roots colored as often as I like, and I definitely get my money's worth. Love the self-drying option as well as the glosser option and having the choice of a professional blowout. I can't see going back to a regular salon for my haircolor.

This salon takes a unique approach -- they focus exclusively on coloring, with no cuts or styling services. I tried the root touch-up with an additional gloss treatment and was really pleased with the quality of the products -- definitely gentler on the hair than store-bought dyes. I've had two experiences at this color bar. The first was last year, and I went in for an all-over color. I came away not loving the color at all (it was really orange) and then needed to make an appointment to have it fixed. The most challenging part of all of this was dealing with the phone system and not being able to get through to the actual Somerville store! Love this place! I was worried because I only discovered the Yelp review on my way to the salon, but the negative reviews did not match my experience. Christa was professional and very good at her job. The schedule worked smoothly. Price was great. I was very happy with the experience and will definitely be back!

Having been both a customer and employee, I can speak from a perspective unlike others here. This place has top of the line color. They are blue bunny certified, which means no animal cruelty. Speaking from experience, as a professional licensed cosmetologist, I can say from my first hand experience, that Madison Reed's products are truly top tier.
