Amazing tv minus the infrared blasters
I decided to take the plunge into 4k and replace my Vizio E series (hd but not 4k or hdr). I did not buy from amazon rather from best buy because I wanted it in hand and not have to schedule a delivery which is hard to do with my work schedule. So here is my review:
Setup: I set this tv up by myself which was do-able but would definitely have been easier with a friend. I have this tv on a stand so I can't comment on hanging it on the wall but to get the whole thing set up took about 20 minutes. A few of the steps made me step back and say "what does that mean" but I was able to figure it out. I would say all and all the set up is pretty easy.
First time use: When you turn this tv on you will set it up with your google account. If you don't have one you should probably do that before you start this step. Initial setup was pretty simple and took about 5 minutes. I used the "infrared blaster" to link my verizon fios cable box to the tv (read below). Once I was set up it was time to take this baby for a test drive.
Infrared Blasters: I have to give this one particular aspect of the tv 2 stars. I used the blasters to connect my fios set top box and my vizio sound bar. The blaster detected both and connected with both. Once I tried operating them with the remote though, things went down hill. The remote will bring up the guide for the box but when I select a channel nothing happens. It will bring up the volume on the sound bar, but once I stop hitting up on the volume, it continues by itself until it gets to max volume. I have played around with this for over an hour and have since given up. This is the only reason I dropped the tv down to 4 stars.
Picture (non 4k): My fios is sending a 1080p signal to the tv. The upscaling is very good. I checked out CNN, some premium channels, HGTV and a few others. The upscaling was impressive. I can definitely tell the difference between true 4k and the upscale, but its definitely a great picture better than standard hd
Picture (4k): I streamed a few netflix and amazon videos in 4k. It was truly unreal. This picture is amazing. It seems 3d even though its not 3d. Its so crisp, bright, sharp, and any other word you could imagine to describe a truly amazing picture. I have a coral reef program on right now while I am writing this and it feels like I am sitting there in person!
3d: So this tv has 3d capabilities but I don't plan on using them. 3d tends to give me migraines and i don't own the glasses so I cant comment on this.
Sound: Like any flat screen without front facing speakers the sound won't be great. I would invest in a soundbar. The vizio one is only 99 dollars. That being said I did run into an issue. The soundbar blocks the remote for the tv which made me get innovative. I put the tv stand on an old textbook raising it up the amount needed.
This vs the 830d: So here is where the question lies. Is this tv worth the extra 300 bucks over the 830d. I was able to compare the 2 side by side showing the same thing on the best buy showroom. They had "Pacific Rim" playing. To be completely honest I couldn't see THAT much of a difference. The blacks were blacker and the screen was brighter, but I don't know if it is THAT different. I ended up with the 930 so clearly I was influenced somewhat but I don't know that you would go wrong with the 830.
Overall: I am really happy with this purchase. The differene between this and my vizio E series is like going from standard def to high def. The fios is better, the 4k is unreal, and I am just very happy with the purchase. Highly recommended!
