Let down I was very excited to surprise my husband with a weekend getaway. I booked the Whitegate cottage at a price of $408 a night including fees and taxes. From the website I was assured it would be an elegant experience but instead the cottage was a lot smaller than it appeared online. The bed was like sleeping on the floor. The hardest bed I have ever slept on. The next night we actually slept on the couch in the living room. There wasn't a tv in the bedroom which I didn't expect and I have to have a tv on at night to f... read more

Avoid the Carl Sandburg Room We stayed in the Carl Sandburg room and were very disappointed. Used furniture (not antiques), cramped quarters, old windows with flaking (lead?) paint, insufficient air conditioning, tiny TV (a bummer only because the Olympics were on). Towel smelled of mildew. Poor bath products. Other rooms appear to have been in better shape than this one. I hope for the inn's sake this is so. I wish we had stayed in one of the city's downtown hotels - rates are cheaper and rooms are better. As is, we paid $$... read more

Beautiful Inn But We Didn't Experience the Beauty The inn itself is beautiful, and the grounds are exquisite. The only room available for my mom, sister, and I, though, was the James Joyce suite located at the end of the property. It was closer to the neighboring psychologist's office than it was to the inn. The decor was nothing like that of the inn. It was tastefully decorated, but the best way I can describe the style was that it was similar to a nice Hampton Inn. We paid $269 for the suite with a king size bed and a pull... read more

good food, ok bedroom The Good: Food and ambiance were great. The Bad: Room was not as I expected (Carl Sandburg). Especially considering that I specifically asked about a TV, the support staff for the owners should have explained that the TV was not in the bedroom. Will probably will try a different B&B next time.

What was great was really great but what was bad was really bad The house is like a museum of curios, objets d'art and plenty of antiques some of which were actually quite spectacular. The house itself is enormous as well as being an antique in its own right. The grounds are spectacular especially the orchid greenhouse. If you are a fan of orchids this is the place to stay. When you travel you want the basics; clean room, clean bathroom, quiet with low stress. The room we stayed in, The Robert Frost, had a pilot light in the... read more

What A nightmare Stayed in the R. F. room. The pipes broke in the wall sometime in the middle of the night, flooding the downstairs and the player piano. Was awakened before sunup by a loud rap on the door wanting to know what we had done. Long story short, we hadn't done anything, we didn't even know what he was talking about. The break was in the wall. Frank was loud and rude. When we asked to take a shower in another room we were flatly refused. Everything was full, he stated. After leaving without even being able to bath... read more
