If you rent online and the "web rate" seems too good to be true, it is. After only 4 months, they increased my monthly rate by nearly 25% to match the "in-person rate". The facility and the unit, itself, were fine.

I recently rented a space here. I was given an outdoor unit. The unit leaks water as my stuff had visible water on it. Took photos of the water on my stuff and moved out of the unit. Sent manager Lesea an email with pictures. A week later she calls back to say there is no water in the space and the previous renters had no problems. Even with photos she didn't believe me. Recently my fiance and I had the misfortune of losing our home. In our devastation we rented the first storage unit we could find, closest to the house we were losing. Unfortunately, this was a disaster. The woman running the San Pablo Dam Road Extra Space storage facility was a continuous nightmare from day one. REPEAT CUSTOMERS OVERCHARGED ON PRICING I have been a dedicated Extra Space Storage customer at this facility for over four years. Recently I downsized my unit from a 5 x 10 to a 5 x 5. Staff seemed extremely helpful to help transfer my old policy to the new one, making me think they were helping save me money. Moved out with 14 days left before the next months bill was due. Person named Lisa told me she would pro-rate my bill. When I called about it. She hemmed and hawed and made a bunch of BS excuses saying it wasn't going to happen. This is the new American business model. Flip the middle finger to a customer over a few bucks instead of keeping your word and ensuring repeat business.
I would perhaps consider 2 stars because the girl that rented me the unit was very nice and helpful. However, she failed to fully explain this lock situation that goes on with this company which is wierd and as it turns out caused a big blowup with my relationship with ESS. When you rent the unit there is only one lock that you must purchase from ESS. I have rented a storage space from two separate Extra Space facilities. The location in El Sobrante, I rented for only one month. I noticed that when I went to move out of the storage many boxes had been opened. The tape was removed and the edge of some boxes were broken open. I rented in Vallejo after that, and my unit was burglarized and many items were stolen. The manager said that the thieves came in after closing and used an instrument to pry open the security gates. I have a large storage unit here, I've had it 10 plus years, and I discovered the hard way that the internal design of the buildings ( between one lower unit and the next) is not hardened for criminal-thinking people wanting to rummage their next door neighbor's unit. I won't give away the method that allows for people to move between units once inside, But I find this utterly poor design and I am really thinking deeply about leaving as a client.
