In general, assisted living helps your family member feel less lonely, less isolated, most of the time improves their diet and their quality of life. When you combine all these things together, their overall health improves. It's always scary at first but doesn't take long, 2 to 4 weeks for your family member to thrive. Be sure to find a facility that promotes activities the way charter does. They go and tell they're residents about the activity and encourage them to join. That's how they will meet friends. My experience with Charter was pleasant. The director was very helpful in providing information about the place and financial details. Everyone was very kind. The place was nice and clean. The food was regular hospital food which she wasn't crazy about.
The place was very clean and showed really well. The apartment was a good size and in very good condition. But it does seem that the actual nursing care and assistance was over stated. There is very little staffing during the evening and overnight hours. The communication was lacking. My father was sent to the hospital and we were not notified. We would highly recommend Charter to others. Very important to us is the fact that the employees are kind to our dad and are quite competent. We are so glad that our dad is at Charter. We feel the staff at Charter are exceptional.

My mom just loves that it is a smaller community and she said it feels so homey. And the staff is so nice .. she loves the activities!

The single most important matter for my mother has been this: Charter saved her life. Any other issues, such as the quality of the food or the activities, pales in comparison. In early [date removed], it looked like my mother was doomed to living out her days in a nursing home. At first, Charter (then called Cedarhurst), rejected her. A week later, on re-evaluation, they accepted her. Over a period of months, my mother has gone from needing a high level of care to fair amount of independence.
