Any account of the Harbor View's history must begin with Edgartown, its legendary birthplace. Settled in 1671, this early colony steadily came to be known as a prime port for whaling. And as that enterprise grew, so too did Edgartown, in both prominence and influence. In fact, by mid-1800, this bustling municipality had become the Vineyard's wealthiest. But as the whaling industry began to ebb, Edgartown officials turned their attention to a new source of prosperity: tourism. With ambitions of building the finest resort o... read more

Perfect Christmas Great stay at the Harborview for Christmas. Beautiful location. Christmas lights were so pretty and the views of the lighthouse were spectacular!
Beautiful place! Great location, great porch, great fireplace area..!
Vinyard business trip worth vising the island in the off season just to stay there.
GO FOR GOLD ON MARTHA'S VINEYARD This is a most unusual hotel in that it is spread over a number of buildings, with the one containing most of the guest bedrooms connected to the one containing reception, bars and dining room. All the buildongs are of classic white clapboeard consrustion and are beautifully maintained. The service is not as slick as most 4* hotels, but the homely nature adds to the charm. Great location! We loved the Harbor View. It was a great location, right across the street from the lighthouse and walking distance to the village of Edgartown with all of the shops and restaurants. We stayed in the Governor Mayhew building which was nicely renovated and very comfortable. It is an older builder so the floors are very creaky and the bathroom was quite small. But overall, we really enjoyed our stay and hope to return.
Stick to the Summer Months A bit disappointing for Thanksgiving. The Mayhew Building is really a glorified Motel. No elevators and while only 3 stories, not an easy walk up with luggage (no bell service offered). Surprisingly "undecorated" for the Holiday season...a few springs of Bittersweet was about it. Have enjoyed the ambience of this property many times in the past (never stayed here) and would do so again...in the summer, sitting on the front porch.
Plenty of character, yet modern Pros: Great place set right on the harbor. Cons: PARKING Location: Nice shops and restaurants. Very hard to find parking at the hotel. A long walk to the facility from parking.
marvelous The stay was pleasant and peaceful.
MV hotel The hotel looks beautiful on the site, but our room was in the back and faced a street. It was raining and winter and there were only portable heaters, no central heat. The hotel seemed in need of updating. The neithborhood was beautiful with a beach, lighthouse and town within walking distance.
