I could not be happier! I came to DC to oversee the roofing job on my father's house. I had made an appointment with the HVAC people who my father had been dealing with. I was not very confident after my phone conversation with them prior to my arrival, so I called Polar Bear, based on Angie's List references. I repeatedly asked Polar Bear if they could patched my A/C so it would last a little bit longer and they said it could not be done. They also told me that the air handler was completely rusted out and that there was no way I could save my A/C. So they wanted to charge me 6,500 dollars for a new system. This guy was very persuasive and almost got me to agree with buying a new one from him, but I didn't. Perhaps the guy was having a bad day, but I had an extremely unpleasant conversation regarding getting an estimate for air conditioning. I live in an old DC row house so air conditioning is complicated. It's not easy to install central air so there are a variety of alternatives/approaches. I've gotten 2-3 estimates so far and each of them has totally different advice. We woke up at 5:00 am with an in house temperature of 47 degrees. Trying to get anyone to come was turning into a seemingly impossible task, we literally called 15 to 20 places. To have them come so quickly and take care of the problem was great.
They diagnosed the problem incorrectly, the problem was the exhaust on the furnace. The technician seemed to be a novice and called his supervisor many times.
The $3240 price what Sears would charge us for a comparable new furnace (80% efficient, 2 speed fan), but we got a new air conditioning coil to replace the one they expected was rusted. (Sears tried to sell us on a more expensive 8 speed fan which does not save any heat and is only an advantage for lowering noise level), $500 for a humidifier, $299 to have them come out and replace the condensate pump which had worked fine until their installation but stayed on afterwards.
