.They did not install it properly. They came out three times and they could not get it right. My roof still leeks where they installed my vent. No one seems to be able to fix it. I had to pay a third party to redo the duct work so the ac would work.
Business response:
It’s always disheartening to read negative reports about the quality and workmanship of our company because we strive to give all of our customers very high quality work. We did encounter a pesky roof leak at this property. We were responsive on 3 occasions to try to identify and fix where this small amount of water was coming in to a supply vent at the rear of the home. Sometimes very small leaks can be hard to identify, even when you’re standing on a roof, but we were unaware that this customer had any issues after our las... read more
Upstairs air conditioning was not working, and I left a message first thing Monday morning (6/7) requesting that someone come take a look. They called me back relatively quickly (within a few hours), and I was given a window of 1:30-3:30 when a technician would arrive that afternoon. Technician arrived at 3:30, and took fan motor cover panel off of air conditioning unit. Inspected the thermostat and air conditioning unit for 10 minutes, and came to the conclusion the fan motor needed to be replaced. Since I had recently had ... read more
After installation, the air conditioner began to leak and did damage to my upstairs ceiling. Joe promptly sent over painters who sanded down the damaged areas, did not lay down appropriate masking, and proceeded to get paint on my hardwood floors and banister, and leave the repaired areas mostly unpainted-- saying they'd require another layer and that they'd come back. They never did. Now it's 2010. The boiler made it through one winter without any problems. Now in the middle of its second winter, it's causing the whole hous... read more
Had I not checked this furnace for 3-6 months, the efficiency of home heat would have been drastically reduced and unfiltered air would have unnecessarily sooted and dusted the furnace motor, reducing its lifespan. My wife called the owner of Polar Bear to express our concerns and to ask that someone come and remedy the problem. Instead of trying to understand and help, the owner began defending the workmanship of the installation, became upset, and was questioning the validity of our complaints. Although the owner agreed to... read more
This is very unprofessional. If a company miscommunicates with a customer, they should rectify the situation. I would not recommend them.
Business response:
WE EMPATHIZE WITH THE CUSTOMER. HOWEVER, WE HAVE REASON TO BELIEVE THAT THIS CALL WAS NOT PLACED WITH POLAR BEAR A/C PLUMBING AND HEATING INC. THERE ARE SEVERAL HVAC COMPANIES IN THE DC METRO AREA THAT USE THE TERM ‘POLAR’ AS A PREFIX TO THEIR NAMES. BASED ON A NUMBER OF INCONSISTENCIES BETWEEN THE CUSTOMER’S EXPERIENCE AND OUR STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE, WE BELIEVE THAT THIS CUSTOMER MAY HAVE BOOKED THE ABOVE-DESCRIBED SERVICE WITH ANOTHER OPERATOR. BELOW ARE OUR REASONS FOR REACHING THIS CONCLUSION: 1. WE HAVE SEARCHED O... read more
My husband and I contacted three companies to give an estimate on replacing our boiler and our thermostat. Two of the three companies informed us that we did not need to replace the boiler because it was in good working condition (we didn't have a problem in the past, it just was a little beat up during construction last year and we didn't know if it needed replacing or not). The representative from Polar Bear informed us that we only needed to get our boiler vacuumed because he noticed a bit of rust above the flame areas an... read more

WE CHARGE A STANDARD RATE OF $295 FOR THE INSTALLATION OF THE HONEYWELL DIGITAL PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTATS. HONEYWELL IS A BRAND WE TRUST. THE COST OF $295 IS ARRIVED AT BY INCORPORATING OUR STANDARD TRAVEL FEE FOR SERVICE CALLS, A LABOR RATE FOR THE TIME SPENT ON THE INSTALLATION, AND THE COST OF THE THERMOSTAT. WE BELIEVE THIS TOTAL TO BE A REASONABLE RATE. THE ADDITIONAL $60 WAS FOR THE LABOR FOR CLEANING OF THE FURNACE, BRINGING THE TOTAL SERVICE COST TO $355. BOTH THE STANDARD COST FOR A PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT INSTALLATI... read more
I called them and made an appointment and they showed up two hours late, ten minutes before my guests showed up and I had to send them away. I was very annoyed.
Business response:
THE NATURE OF A BUSINESS IN WHICH TECHNICIANS MOVE FROM PLACE TO PLACE AND ENCOUNTER UNEXPECTED CHALLENGES IS THAT WE CANNOT ASCERTAIN HOW LONG AN APPOINTMENT WILL RUN. THE WHOLE DAY’S SCHEDULE THEREFORE IS FLUID. OUR COMPETITOR COMPANIES GENERALLY PROVIDE A 4 HOUR ARRIVAL WINDOW, BUT POLAR BEAR’S WINDOW STANDS AT TWO HOURS FOR CUSTOMER CONVENIENCE. WE TYPICALLY STATE THAT OUR TECHNICIAN(S) WILL ARRIVE BETWEEN X AND X TIME, FOR EXAMPLE BETWEEN 9 AND 11 AM. IN PRACTICE, THIS MEANS THAT THE TECHNICIAN MAY ARRIVE RIGHT AT 9 AM,... read more
Kiel was brusque and dismissive from the moment he arrived. He claimed that the plumber that had been by in the previous hour didn't know what he was talking about, and ignored the information I gave him about the leak (which the plumber had cleared up before telling me to call an A/C tech), since he said he didn't see a leak, he couldn't comment on it. He also said that my unit was 7 yrs. old and would probably have to be replaced soon, and that it was clotted with dog hair (I've lived here for 5 1/2 yrs, the previous owner... read more

WE APOLOGIZE FOR INCIDENTS IN WHICH OUR STAFF HAS BEEN RUDE OR BRUSQUE. WE WISH TO HUMBLY STATE THAT COMPLAINTS ABOUT PARTICULAR STAFF MEMBERS ARE UNCOMMON, AND INDEED, INCONSISTENT WITH THOSE STAFF MEMBERS’ PERSONA. OVERALL, WE RATE AS AN ‘A’ GRADE COMPANY ON ANGIE’S LIST. OUR TYPICAL STANDARD OF PERFORMANCE IS DISCERNIBLE FROM OUR NUMEROUS PAGES OF POSITIVE TESTIMONIALS ON ANGIE'S LIST. WE MUST STATE THAT WE CONDUCT OVER 1500 SERVICE CALLS AND INSTALLATIONS PER YEAR, AND THAT WE HAVE A COMPLAINT RATIO OF LESS THAN 1% OF OU... read more
I had used Polar Bear four previous times to fix my heating and cooling systems. The first three times, Joe (the owner) came out and did the work and was great. Last fall when my AC stopped working, I scheduled someone to come out and they never showed. Because I had used them before and had good experiences, I decided to try again. Joe came out and fixed the problem. My AC is now not working again, so I called and asked if I could speak to Joe about it. The receptionist informed me that he no longer does service calls and s... read more
