I selected Solar Optimum based on the advice of an energysage representative and their low price per watt. At the time, they also had good reviews on this website. The system design seemed to go fairly smoothly, but the SO representative had trouble explaining to me the differences in the financing options, the cost of financing, and sent several quote sheets with the wrong specifications. Interestingly, it turned out that contrary to what I thought he had told me, the original price break-down didn't include the interest c... read more

We went with solar optimum as I had seen some other good reviews from people on message boards. The initial process was great. We were able to get a site inspection pretty quickly, so I was hopeful this would be a sign of things to come. They sent automated emails of each step and what to expect next. The meter spot and permit submittal went fine as well. After that is when communication started to erode. From then on, I had to be the one to initiate the solar panel install, then the panel box upgrade, then the arrangement... read more

Stay away. They will rope you in with a good upfront price on a system saying it'll cover 100% of your electricity utilization. In my case it was severely under-powered and they suggested upgrading to a more expensive configuration. For that price, I was able to find a competitor that was able to offer a much better deal for a better system (better pricing, financing, and overall system output). I gave them a chance to win my business but they were unable to price match. What's worse, they declined to refund me my $500 depo... read more

Solar Optimum my time. After I signed a contract, they promised they'd deliver a final project plan to me by early February. Weeks after that deadline I emailed them for an update. No response. Second time I got an answer: they've cancelled my contract because of a city permitting delay. I give them credit for quickly refunding my deposit, but I wish they had communicated with me more clearly as soon as the city delay occurred.

Business response:

To no fault of Solar Optimum, the City of Oakland has a requirement for any panel upgrade or sub panel installation that all new breakers have to be installed with AFCI functionality-- which doesn’t present an issue for us as a contractor. The problem happens when the wiring of a house is old which makes all breakers trip continuously after solar installation. Unfortunately this was your particular situation and the reason for the cancellation. Also, the city requires to change all outdated wiring to new which becomes a ver... read more

I would not recommend Solar Optimum to anyone. Choose a highly recommended local installer. For me, the good news is in the end, the panels are up and working well. However, the process and communication was a straight F if I were grading them. I chose Solar Optimum because of the advice of the person I spoke to from energy sage. I really appreciated the service and guidance that was provided by energy sage, but in the end I wish I had just chosen a local, highly recommended solar installer. From the beginning, the communica... read more

Installation process was ok, but I was promised by the salesman (Erik) that I will get a match for the rebate Panasonic was offering. Even after 5 months, the rebate that was promised before I signed the contract was not honored. He kept telling me that it has to be approved by CFO. Not sure how they will honor your panels for 30 years when they can’t honor $250 rebate matching.

I was really looking forward to start using solar energy and chose Solar Optimum as the partner on this journey. The decision was partly based on their large number of positive reviews. However, this has been the worst experience - after over 5 months from the initial discussion, the installation is still not completed! Customer service and satisfaction are NOT their priorities, and they take no responsibility for any shortcomings at all. It started out with the long wait for getting the permit approval. I had to initiate c... read more

I requested a quote for a specific set of solar panels and inverters from Solar Optimum. Ryan Howe responded saying that he would check with his ordering team and get back to me. After 3 days of being put off, I ended up emailing Ryan Howe telling him that there was no need to proceed. 3 days of not having an answer on a quote request may be acceptable to Solar Optimum, Ryan Howe, and some customers but not to me. How long would it take for Solar Optimum or Ryan Howe to respond to a service request..? I'm not about to find o... read more

This interaction with Solar Optimum says it all: "My name is Mark Howe, Sales Director of California for Solar Optimum. I understand that we had a small hiccup with your project and I would love to discuss and hopefully resolve to advance your project." My response: "Hi Mark, no need for discussion. The project has been canceled. Our roof was left open and the project was delayed by three days as a result of not getting footings installed in time. Luckily our roofer has been flexible with timing, however I have no desire ... read more

Business response:

As you know your project was at the beginning stages and had not even gone through permitting. You signed your contract at the end of October, and have rushed us constantly to complete your project . We completed a site assessment on October 30th and reviewed it quickly in an attempt to accommodate you. However, you decided to cancel the project once we relayed pertinent information specific to your project because you wanted everything to fit around your roofing schedule. While we try to meet the needs and requests of our a... read more
