We went to the San Antonio Aquarium and today we went to the Austin Aquarium. Please do not go to either one of these aquariums. The animals look used, and depressed. I am still sad about the small living enclosures that the animals are kept in and they all look depressed and odd. Staring at walls with bald spots . It was the most depressing aquariums. I came home and researched to see who own them and why would the city of Austin mistreat its animals. This is a for profit company owned by name Covino. Google this place. Ple... read more
The Austin Aquarium is a decent option if you need something to entertain your kids for an hour. It's fairly small, but almost all the exhibits are interactive...for a cost. In addition to general admission, you have to buy tokens that you can use to buy fish food, ray food, shark food, or animal encounters. Animal food is one token per container-which depending on the animal you are feeding may contain only one piece of food. Animal encounters range from 2-20 tokens. There are also a lot of touch tanks and opportunities for... read more
The standards of animal care at this establishment is no less than heart-breaking. The otters seemed to be displaying signs of psychological distress, and after doing a lot of research, that seemed to be true. The mammals were in small enclosures with no enrichment whatsoever, the capybaras were isolated, and if you don't know anything about their life in the wild, Capybaras are extremely social creatures, with not only their own species, but many other species. The stingrays seemed to be starved due to them jumping at any c... read more
Really enjoyed the ability to get so close to the animals and experience the care given to all the creatures there well done!
very small but very fun. enter actions with the animals is the best part! lots of cool fish and animals.
We visited during Christmas week and had a great time. The handlers and keepers were very approachable, happy to answer questions, and to share information/personality tidbits about the animals. The zookeeper we visited with is very bonded to and does care about the comfort and well-being of the animals in his care. There are also up-close feeding opportunities with lemurs, penguins, parquets, stingrays and others.
For the amount of money they charge for entrance fees and then on top of it having to buy dam tokens for the attractions is beyond me and for them not to have enough employees to run each attraction it's ridiculous, you would think they can staff accordingly to their business.. so over this place not worth the time or the money..
The Austin Aquarium is a fun place to take you family and there is a lot more inside than it appears. Cute animals to interact with. The highlight for us was Merlyssa, the mermaid. She was awesome! She was believable and so friendly. It wasnt like she just put on a costume or acted like she was tired or bored. She sang, took pics, interacted, all while being patient and kind. We will definitely be back to see her as she made our family smile! Call ahead and ask for her if your littles (or grown ones) like mermaids.
Very kid friendly! There's also a kid space where they have games on the floor for the littlest to enjoy. My daughter loved it. Snack bar was closed due to short staff when we went but more to enjoy! One of the workers was super nice, peoples tokens got stuck in the feeding machine and he refunded everyone with more than enough!
