My dog was a regular patient here for over a year. We had no issues because all our visits were for routine care. Over the summer we had a real emergency injury when my dog was attacked by another dog and caused a proptosis of the eye. It was at night so we went to an emergency vet for immediate care and then transitioned back over to Caring Hands later that week. The care and attention we recieved was substandard at best. This review is mainly for the Alexandria office on Van Dorn street. My dog (3+ year patient of the Glebe Road office) recently had major surgery in the Alexandria office (because the Glebe Road office was completely booked for surgeries, I was told). I was advised before I picked her up that she was "uncomfortable" upon waking up so she was given an additional pain shot. Me: Hi I would like to make an appointment for my cat. Her: We don't have any available appointments until next week. How about next Thursday? But if you want to pay the urgent care fee we can see you tomorrow morning. WTF!

Just joined yelp and wanted to make everyone aware of how unhappy I was with Caring Hands. I took my dog there for an emergency appt...my dog was vomiting earlier in the day and wanted a vet to check him out. They suggested immediate surgery for an intestinal blockage that was nowhere to be found on an x-ray. My gut told me they were wrong. Absolutely unacceptable experience on the telephone with this organization this morning. I've been there once in 2010 and I guess there's a (though un-recalled) reason I never went back. I called at 7:30am this morning, shortly after their opening, with a request to be seen for an emergency due to a broken or sprained ankle for my dog. First and foremost: I don't mean to give them a bad review for the quality of doctors and care of the staff, because that is outstanding, but for the way this facility is being managed and run which is to me: UNACCEPTABLE. You judge a place in many ways, my way to judge a place will be explained here: My dear Caring Hands: there are great vets everywhere in the DC area, so it's not like people have to come here for your doctors. I am once again disturbed at how I make an appointment and then sit and wait as the time clicks by. This time is was over a 30 minute wait. As usual, no desk person said anything to me as I waited and waited and waited. As usual, the vet told me it was a crazy day with emergencies. I've been a customer for a number of years (7 or so) and the vet staff seems to come and go and I rarely have the same vet twice. I am looking for another vet.

If you love your pet don't take them here!! My experience is that this vet is overpriced and only concerned with their interests not my pets. I will be finding a new vet!

Be prepared to wait to be seen and wait to pay the bill. In between, expect to ask the front desk several times for your pet to be seen and then to pay the bill. The vets and technicians are outstanding. I've been coming here for several years and the last four visits have been stressful because of the communication problems with the front desk.
