If you ever want to see your pet again, do not take it here. We brought our dog in the day before her surgery to have prep for a polyp removal and never saw her alive again. Our happy, sweet, friendly doggie had many years of life ahead of her, which she will never see because the staff at Charleston Veterinary Referral Center do not know the difference between an esophagus and a trachea. In what should have been a simple procedure for a competent, experienced hospital, it took THREE TRIES for a tube to finally be inserted i... read more

Just an update! For some reason it would not let me update my original review but... I had my Dixie girls surgery done professionally for $200 back in Alabama and come out happier than she was when she went in for surgery. The most expensive vet in Tuscaloosa would've been $800 for removal of the tumors(SHOULD NOT BE ANYWHERE CLOSE TO $9,000‼) So that just tells me you guys are charging WAY to much for your services. A business lasts by thinking of their customers first not lining your pockets with their money... Hopefully... read more

Business response:

Hi Matthew. We are glad to know you were impressed by the friendliness of our team. We want everyone who visits our hospital, human and animal, to feel welcome. As far as the consult fee, we're sorry to hear that you didn't find it to have value. A consultation with one of our board certified clinicians involves medical record review, full physical examination, and recommendations. Often times, additional diagnostic tests and treatments are recommended, and we do our best to work with each pet owner and their individual situ... read more

For the sake of your animal, your fur baby, the love of your life! DO NOT GO HERE!!! We were told if we didn't pay the extra fees that if our dog went in to cardiac arrest they would not do CPR! They then charged almost $500 for a evaluation of our puppy and suggested if we weren't going to do a MRI and surgery $10000 we should put our dog down. We were there for 5 hrs waiting, and no comfort care or treatment was done. They said per the paperwork we were only there 2 hrs. He sat in that cold cage with no pain medications f... read more

Business response:

Thank you for your review. We genuinely care about the feedback from pet owners who utilize our services. The medical notes that we have in your pet's chart differ greatly from your written account and what took place during your visit. Our records indicate prompt quality care and communication that we stand behind. Should you wish to review this further, we would welcome a discussion with you via phone. Out of respect for the confidentiality of each pet's medical history, we do not engage in detailed online correspondence.... read more

Will always regret using this facility, my beloved pet is dead due to sloppy post-operative care in a chaotic, small and loud ICU. Surgical team abandoned my pet and me after surgery and handed off to a stranger who on day one after surgery wanted pet euthanized. Do not risk your loved animal at this facility, go to a vet university in NC or Fla. Anywhere but here or you will be burying your pet. Communication is poor, slow to answer and calls are not returned. Money matters immensely to CVRC.

Business response:

Hi Paula: We hear your pain in your review and are very sorry for your loss. Due to the complex and high risk nature of the surgery, your pet's post-operative care was assigned to a board certified critical care specialist. Our team champions every pet during treatment and recovery. We do not take the topic of euthanasia lightly and only discuss it when a pet's health begins to worsen despite all of our best efforts. We did our best to explain the risks prior to surgery and prepare you for the potential complications. We re... read more

Extremely poorly run practice. Scheduled my first appointment and filled out the paper work they sent me, arrived and they said they didn't have my appointment scheduled....I should have known not to go back, but my dog needed surgery. So we went back for an actual appointment and scheduled a TPLO and had the surgery done. THEN I called less than 24 hours before my next follow up appointment to ask some questions and they told me that the surgeon who did the surgery was gone and they didn't didn't know when she was coming ba... read more

Business response:

Our team is disappointed to hear that you were not happy with our services or communication. We appreciate you giving us the opportunity to speak about it by phone. On the day of your pet's appointment, our intention was to provide options so your pet could still receive follow-up care while respecting your work schedule. We apologize that these didn't meet your needs. We sincerely hope your pet is doing well, and we wish you and your family a happy holiday season.

They killed my beautiful Lois due to the negligence (they admitted to) of the anesthesia technician. I brought my baby there to have an operation but she never had a chance due to the the negligence of the tech. The technician at Charleston Veterinary Referral Center overdosed my baby and sent her into cardiac arrest. They brought her back, but she then had about seven more cardiac arrests and they couldn't rescue her from the living hell they sent her. The technician that killed my dog was not fired or suspended. This ... read more

This is a business that is driven by upcharging by increased testing and recommendations of unnecessary vet services to increase billing ever since it was first sold first to an investment group and then flipped to a German private equity company. While one of the few emergency vets in Charleston, my experience was that the corporate owners are only concerned about increasing costs to increase their corporate profits. It's corporate side can only be described as vampiric. I don't judge the doctors who have signed noncompete... read more

I took my, almost 2 year old, cat in on Saturday evening after noticing he was not peeing all of the sudden. My home vet closes at 5pm on Saturdays and are closed completely on Sundays. I got there and was seen promptly and unfortunately the staff determined it was a worse case scenario-- my cat had a urinary blockage due to stress. They told me it could be anywhere from $1400-$2600 dollars. I knew going in that it was going to pricey, but that shocked me a little. We talked about lowering the price, as I am a college stude... read more
