Is it weird to be so excited about a storage space? We needed a large-ish room for about 2 months while we were subletting between leases. Extra Space on 3rd Ave in Gowanus had exactly what we needed, & when I went online, they were running a first month free special, so we hopped on it. I have the contents of almost an entire apartment at ESS on 3rd Ave. From the time I rented the unit, I was impressed with the customer service. Well, after Hurricane Sandy, I was a bit worried about my unit as it located in the ESS basement. ESS called me a day after the hurricane passed to say that the basement did take on water and that I should come by and evaluate my unit & belongings. Lo and behold, some of my stuff was ruined. My husband and I had a great experience with Linus and the rest of the staff. Very nice, professional, accommodating, friendly, helpful, and -- as one of the other reviewers noted -- totally unobtrusive unless you need them, and then they're there for you. However, you should definitely read through the contact -- we were almost charged for an entire month because we didn't call to tell them we were taking our stuff out four days into the month. My experience with this company so far (before moving) has been outstanding. Their website makes it very easy to sign up, and I received an email and confirmation call immediately after doing so. I spoke with staff twice after signing up, and they are incredibly helpful and friendly, happy to answer any questions. And since they are very local for anyone in Carroll Gardens or Gowanus, they are also very convenient! We park our JP Urban Moving truck in the Extra Space 3Av parking lot and also move customers in and out of the storage facility. Linus and his team are consistently friendly, accommodating and thoroughly professional. The Space: We've been in every storage facility in town, and this one rates the highest for many reasons, not the least of which are its professionally managed front office, well-maintained & secure storage units, dry & comfortable climate, clean & fresh-smelling atmosphere and easy elevator access. ... read more

Horrible Horrible Experience. Rent increased about 2 months in. Always dirty the people in the office have an attitude when u ask for a broom or mop because they wont clean anything. And/Or theyll pass U a broom and tell U do it yourself. The One and Only bathroom does not work so people are pissing in the stairwell or in a bottle and leaving it here. Great storage , great location, clean ... but the person who handle 150 17 street Brooklyn on Sunday is the most unpleasant person I ever had a deal with. He is doing Evrything Possible to make you unhappy. It's discusting!

Extra Space Storage nearly double the rent after 4 months. Then it's claimed your original rent was "promotional." However, there's no prior notice of it doubling after 4 months. It's a SCAM! Go to Public Storage, they are much less expensive and let you pay in advance to lock in the rental price.

We have had a storage unit from this company for many many years previously known as Life Storage. We were paying like 90 dollars a month at this location in Brooklyn on Coney Island Ave and Ave I. I did not receive any notice by email or by landline phone both on record of any increase, we were at this location for like 3 months or so. It went up to 175.
