Works great! Less filling!
I read dozens of Reviews online - as I always do before making a buying decision - when I decided to replace my HP Pagewide non-multifunction inkjet printer. At first, I was leaning heavily (again) toward a laser multifunction unit because I really did miss the copying and scanning functions. The reason I was replacing the HP was not my fault - it suddenly developed a streaking color print issue that HP said "cannot be fixed without replacing the main head unit" - and they refused to cover it on a printer less than two years old. And that head unit cost more than I paid for the printer. So, GOODBYE HP!! I will NEVER buy another one.
Here are my impressions on the new (actually, Factory Refurbished (purchased direct from BrotherUSA) Brother MFC-6935DW (purchased direct from BrotherUSA)...
I do not see ANY of the "big problems" reported by a few Reviewers here. No "3/4-in wide borders being deleted while scanning". No "copying issues". Nothing of the sort. I printed out a full sheet of solid green to test this. Nearly edge-to-edge. Then copied it. Then scanned it. Both copy and scan were nearly identical as to full page coverage. If people are experiencing weird anomalies, I suggest they look at their Page Settings. Or maybe they have a defective machine. It happens.
Here are a few quick observations...
1) This does NOT seem to be nearly as heavy as some reviews stipulate it to be. It is quite large, but easily manageable by an average person. I was able to lift it onto my desk area and set it up quickly - and I'm 66 with a weak back, and had to get it up a flight of stairs.
2) It is slow by comparison to the Pagewide. Like a typical inkjet, really. The Pagewide spoiled me on everything except dependability and quality of Tech Support. Then, again, the cartridges were very expensive - even for an inkjet!
3) Photo Paper is only supported in the top tray of this Brother unit - Tray 1. But it tells you immediately if you try to designate Photo Paper (or Glossy Paper) from Tray 2. And those photos are perfectly acceptable for office use. Since the inability of the HP to print photos or color images without really bad 2" wide streaked areas was my biggest disappointment, this was the first thing I checked.
4) It is very unusual to find any desktop printer that handles 600 sheets of paper! Very unusual.
5) The machine quiets down right after printing. There is no lengthy running of fans that I've noticed.
6) When you install the cartridges, be sure you shake the BLACK INK ONLY prior to installation. In fact, do not rush this installation. Read everything, or follow the prompts as you proceed. Every printer is not the same, no matter how many you have installed. Do not assume you know it all. Intended print side faces DOWN in both trays.
7) Going directly to their website - as prompted in the Easy Setup Guide (but only as an option) - gives you two advantages: a) You get the latest drivers and software. b) It prompts you to update the Firmware during that process. As Martha might say: "That's a good thing!"
So, all-in-all, this was a great purchase since the reported operating costs are so low. To get the advantage of oversize printing options was icing on the cake. Two trays included in the purchase - Wow!! Final thoughts: We have used Brother, HP, Epson, Lexmark, Canon, Toshiba, and Dell printers at work for many, many years. All of them had their quirks and failures - except the Brother units. The ladies in Bookkeeping ALWAYS bemoaned the loss of any Brother printer whenever us Tech Support Guys tried something new because it was maybe on sale. They constantly said "But we never had any problems with our Brother printer!" So I thought it might be a good time to try Brother at home when the HP let me down "out of the blue". I have not rated Tech Support here because I have not had to use them.
I hope I made the right decision - but I do miss the speed of that Pagewide. Only a laser was faster. But I was not looking forward to replacing toner at $100 Per Color Cartridge, so I'm giving this inkjet a try (1 cent for black, 6 cents for color - on an average page).
