Worst caesar salad we have ever had - it was served with romaine lettuce stalks (not cut up) with some parmesan cheese cut up over it and a poor tasting creamy caesar dressing. Beware that the soft shell crab BLT entree is deep fried (no indication of this on the menu), and also beware that the grilled Maine lobster tails entree was served as a 3-half tails in a soup. We chose Ela's for my birthday dinner based on other reviews and the scenic view. While the manager at the front entrance was pleasant enough, our waiter was inattentive and distracted. No one acknowledged the special occasion, even though I indicated it was a birthday celebration on the reservation made days in advance. The food was very good, but the overall experience was not what I was expecting. The views are only of the channel and in March there is no possibility of seeing the sunset.
Our second visit was dramatically different than our first. The food and service were both a disappointment. With all the great choices in HIlton Head for fine dining-I would probably not return. The spot is really beautiful-I hope the ownership focuses on customer service in the future so that the restaurant has a chance in this competitive market.

The food is good. The scallops were exquisite, the crab cakes were a little too dry and the forbidden rice was acceptable. The desserts were common, not special. This is true for all three: pecan pie, chocolate bundt cake, and the tiramisu. The tiramisu replaced the key lime pie which was on the menu but had sold out. The service could be greatly improved. We waited at the table for 1 hour and 20 minutes before we were served our appetizers. Note that there were only 4 other tables there. We ordered 3 apps. and we received one and then the other two were served with the salads. The dressing they brought out for two of the salads was soy sauce insteda balsalmic/vin. The total meal took over 3 1/2 hours. This is the second time dinging here and the first visit was great. This time however was so bad I am not sure that I would return even for a complimentary meal. We were extremely disappointed with Ela. Will not return. We ordered the chef special for the evening and found it unediable. We were a party of 4 and all of our meals were sub-par. Our server was pleasant, but did not check in to see if we liked our food, at which time I would have told him. I do not see this resturant here for the long term.
The spot is beautiful but the food was terrible. No flavor and served at room temperature. Will never go back and will not recommend Ela's.
made reservations on line, then went to the restaurant and picked out a nice table by the window with the bartender and host right there a few days before dinner. When we got there with another couple, we were told that table was occupied and sat us upstairs by ourselves [one other table was there for about 20 minutes, then left].
