We paid $99 for an inspection of our furnace. The inspector spent 10 minutes with a small stethoscope and told me the pilot light went out, but he suspected there might be a crack in the furnace. I wish he would have taken a part the furnace to confirm his suspicions. I proceeded to get multiple quotes for a new furnace and Specialty Heating was the most expensive. We ended up going with Rose City Heating and Cooling and wish we would have paid them for the inspection, because they were exceptional!

What a mess. Everything started fine - nice consultants, sales people, etc. But for some reason, they decided to send their least experienced repair people to my home again and again. Here are all the people who came to my home and required me to take time off of work: 1. Initial repairman who told me my furnace was dead. 2. Sales person who helped me buy a new one. 3. Installers who installed a new one. They left an open can of epoxy on the duct which made the house smell like a glue factory every time the heat came on. 4. ... read more

Business response:

The inconvenience and frustration this has created is a cause of great concern. We intend to have our installations go smoothly. in this case we fell quite short and I do apologize for that. we do intend to improve our processes when we receive feed back from our customers. Having what should have been a 4 step process turn into 8 or 9 is never good. There were 2 corrections that could easily have been remedied in one trip. Had we emailed the entire report to our technician we could have avoided 2 trips and the inconvenience... read more

I received an email from the manager asking who I had emailed with at Specialty when the appointment was set up. I didn't reply to him because I was surprised that he did not remember our phone conversation where I already told him it was Melanie. It gave the impression that this happens often enough that they cannot keep track of these unfortunate situations. I also received an email from Yelp telling me that they think my review was intended for another company....that I may have mistakenly reviewed the incorrect company..... read more

Business response:

I am very sorry to hear about this experience. Thank you for clarifying who was involved in this problem. I am genuinely sorry I don't recall your phone call. We take our online reputation very seriously which is why I flagged this comment prior to your response. As the person you communicated with doesn't work here any longer there is no corrective action I can take but I will certainly use this unfortunate story for a learning lesson for us all. We take these kinds of mis-communications very seriously and work diligent... read more

Had them come in a few weeks ago and had a horrible experience. Our heater was just blowing cool air and we noticed that it would shut off prematurely. We called them and this is when i proceeded to waste 2-3 days of my time with this company. Technician correctly diagnosed an issue with an igniter needing to be replaced. As soon as he replaced that, we turned the heater on, but noticed that the furnace would turn off prematurely. He opened up the unit, broke out his "scope" and showed me a line -- i'll be honest, i w... read more

Business response:

This is certainly an unfortunate circumstance that we discussed at length with the homeowner. It is our policy to treat potentially cracked heat exchangers (where carbon monoxide can potentially leak into the home) with the utmost caution. We will indeed use this lesson for immediate training during our weekly training meetings for our technicians. We also make every effort to maintain consistent and fair pricing across the board. The particular system proposed is the most advanced heat pump/furnace/zoning system that doe... read more

I give them one thing - they are quick. But.. I needed maintenance done on the furnace. One guy showed up, nice and all, tried to switch the programmable thermostat into manual mode, couldn't do it, said the thermostat was broken and the company would not stand behind the service. Charged me $100 for the visit.. Ok.. I go pull up the manual - turns out it's a setting, you can lock down the thermostat to only do the automatic mode.. Changed that, worked like a charm.. Call them back - they say 'no problem', we'll issue a c... read more

Business response:

I am sincerely sorry that your experience with us was anything less than 5 stars. Our technicians are some of the most highly trained individuals in the Portland area. We hold weekly training meetings and send them to regular manufacturer training as well. Our technicians are hourly employees and are never penalized for the amount of time spent on a job to make sure things are done correctly. Again, I apologize for your experience. Technically, I would suggest that if you have to do anything other than normal operations... read more

We had Specialty install a Trane gas furnace 12 years ago and service it since. We chose them because they seemed very professional even though they charged a bit more. The furnace has developed a water leak inside that they say will cost $1200 to fix. It's out of warranty, and stuff happens, but that was pretty disappointing. The tech who looked at the furnace also told us that our water heater was about to "burst", which would sever the gas line and burn the house down. He said it was a good thing we had homeowners ... read more

Business response:

This is indeed a disappointing story. Please know that we have since had thorough water heating training with our technicians and sales professionals. We were able to straighten out some common misconceptions even amidst our own crew. Thank you for this communication and opportunity for us to learn and grow as a team. Sincerely, Mark - General Manager
