I really wanted to love the Violet Crown! And it has a great selection of movies. I have been there twice - once when we were almost alone in the place and once when it was mobbed because of star Wars. . We tried the food on the quiet day and it was less than ok. Mainly the selections just weird and it took forever. And they didn't have a lot of the wines on the wine list. On the Star Wars day it was clear they were completely overwhelmed. This place is great. Awesome food, awesome drinks, reasonably priced (a first for movies theaters - at least for me!). The theaters are small, but very comfortable. You can bring your food and drink (as long as the drink isn't liquor due to the state's ABC laws). Definitely recommend it.
Nice looking theatre. The concept of dine in theatre is cool but it isn't a true dine in theatre. You have to order food and drinks at bar then carry everything upstairs to your seat. Then you are stuck with a plate in front of you the entire movie. No servers. I do like the reserved seat situation, makes going to the movie less stressful. Fantastic atmosphere and beer selection. The seats are comfortable and you get to select/reserve them ahead of time. The managers are tough on talkers and texters, which is alone worth a 5 star rating because you can't say the same thing about other movie theaters in the area. Charlottesville is lucky to have such a cool and unique franchise here. Cinephiles rejoice.
You can't get much better than this for a theater. You definitely need to arrive early to order food. You can either sit at a table in the lounge until a waiter comes to take your order, or just order from the register. We ordered from the register, and our pizzas took 30 minutes to come out of the kitchen. A waitress asked for our order about 20 minutes later. The screens are small except for Theatre 1. The food is about a B (fries were good). But, I have to kind of like it because Downtown really needed a movie theatre.
This place is amazing, and we're very happy to have it on the downtown mall. This is exactly the type of place Charlottesville needed. You pick your own seats in the theater, so you don't have to rush to get into the theater early. And it's smart, because what does that mean? Time to drink more beers. Oh my gosh what a great addition to the Downtown strip. It is sooo beautiful inside the moment you walk in, and the restaurant and bar is so impressive. The menu is small but decently priced, and there is coffee and popcorn upstairs. The chairs are amazingly comfy inside the theater and you can even bring food and drinks inside! (only bought from the theater). I'm never ever going to Regal again, that's for sure.
Still even smells new! Here the third time in our 9 day Charlottesville workshop, ok that does not mean much because we watch a lot of movies , but it really is a good one!
